Depends on the type of mushroom, the weather, and what the picker wants. And this is why fresh gourmet mushrooms that end up in stores look like complete crap. Dried out, busted and just awful looking.. Regular commercial hunters never take the time to care for their harvest. Personally, I like to keep them in optimum conditions until I eat them... Which is why my mushrooms look amazing weeks into storage... I take the time if I'm not headed home that evening... If its just for the day, then all I bring is paper bags.
They are over-nighting in Texas and I have no idea what kind of mushrooms they are going for... likely cubes... Considering its still really warm, boarder-line hot out there, if they want to keep them fresh for the 4 hour drive home the next day, I would suggest keeping them cooled...
Personally, eating them fresh is much better than eating them dried. Stronger. Tastier. Easier to Stomach (For me)
In checking... looks like a good place to hunt this weekend

Cool, thanks for a nice clear response.
I had assumed the OP was after cubes (I shouldnt have assumed) which is why i was curious about the keeping them cool, but in regards to choice edible i can understand the effort you would want to go to, especially in the heat. Where i am you dont have to drive any long distances, and it doesnt get that hot, so its nice to know what you guys in hotter climates do.
Its interesting how individual tastes affect your choice in storage. Way back when i was i was younger and taking shrooms, i always had them dried (but im talking P. subaeruginosa), and they were smoother, more colourful, and far easier on the stomach than fresh.
We dont get cubes here where i am, so my experience with that species is minimal. So thanks for the info.

Well, texas is different than california. California is different period, we have a lot of variables that make our climates complicated to sum up. The property I live on consists of 5 micro climates alone, in only 30 acres. Out here I don't usually go far, but sometimes I do in search of new sights. I have never eaten a fresh cube, but I have eaten fresh cyans, azures, friscosas, fibrillosas... all of which were pretty easy to stomach fresh... my issue is the texture and speshully chewing stems.. I gag and nowdays I usually end up puking... never made tea or honey, going to try that.. done chocolates, that's yummy... recently discovered that jerky can help mask the dried chewy texture, reeeally good trip, no puking that hike was amazing.
