Need help ASAP...going hunting tomorrow urgent question about storage!
    #18918713 - 10/01/13 10:27 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Ok this will seem like a dumb question, but I've searched quite a bit and am not finding any answer!!

I'm going hunting tomorrow morning driving to Houston 4 hours. We will be there looking from morning till the next morning (a full day) and then driving back another 4 hours. How can I keep fresh picked shrooms fresh from wilting/rotting/going bad?? Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is paper bags/paper towels inside some kind of container with the fresh shrooms. Then put those containers in an ice chest separated from ice somehow to act as a refrigerator? if that makes sense... I could put something like a layer of card board on top of the ice so they will stay cool enough but won't freeze or come in contact directly with ice? Would that work? thanks!

You could do that.  I often drive around with them in a box and the heat blasting at them.  Its a bit sketchy though.  Texas sounds like a sketchy place to do that in more so than here as well.

Buy yourself a packet of those brown paper bags for wrapping your lunch in.

The best thing with those bags is they can breath, and your mushrooms are less likely to go off.  If you put them in plastic they are a good breeding ground for bacteria.

I wouldnt bother about keeping them cold, that will only add moisture and increase the chances of ruining them going by them going mushy, and harder to deal with, and potentially losing your actives.

By storing them in brown paper bags in the cool well ventilated parts of your car they should be fine till you get them home.  I wouldnt worry about them drying out, get getting humid and soggy would be bad news in my opinion.

Hope that helps.

yep. you might want to try dry ice to prevent water getting into your bags, but then there is an issue of damaging the mushrooms from too cold a temp so some sort of insulating barrier would be good. this is something that may take careful monitoring and tweaking to find what works best

Wrong.  You will freeze them.  Solid.

Just cool and well ventilated is good, and don't pile 'em too deep.  The problem with an ice chest kind of setup is that they can't breathe.

You have to contain the dry ice, and only use a minimal amount... you can even use a little dry ice to keep your wet ice frozen longer... keep a small amount of dry ice in a freezer ziploc, then place that into another ziploc bag of wet ice, wrap with a terrycloth towel, then keep in a corrugated cardboard box, that is placed inside the butcher paper lined cooler along side the mushrooms.... They will not freeze, depending on conditions, this can keep your mushrooms cool for several days... but this is probably over-kill for a 24 hour storage need... just use a cooler with a frozen ice pack wrapped in a terrycloth towel, keep it in the cooler with your paper bags full of mushrooms... the paper bags from the grocery stores are best, thicker than the lunch bags and still breathable.

You can also breath the box if you are worried about condensation and lack of fresh air... just open it a few times a day... most mushrooms will be just fine... the more sensitive and fragile ones are a bit different, more vulnerable, period.

And yes! Don't pile them deep... use shallow coolers or use crates/baskets/shoe-boxes inside the cooler to distribute their weight better so they don't get all s'mushed.

Thanks alot guys!!! awesome ideas!! i like the idea of a little dry ice separated from the fungi to keep them cool.... we're actually leaving tonight and hunting all morning/day tomorrow, can't wait! hopefully we find some-alot. I figure daytime is better cause I don't know the area very well and night is too hard to see where to go. I appreciate all the responses! i'll report back if i find stuff and actually get to try  the ice chest ice idea out...

if you do decide on dry ice, be sure to insulate it very well! Otherwise you will freeze your mushrooms...

But for your 24hr adventure, I think a frozen plastic ice pack wrapped with a towel will suffice just fine..

I did.  Dry ice is just overkill for this application, you have to take more steps to prevent the dry ice from doing damage than you would have to do just to keep them cool and well ventilated.  I'm not dissin', I'm disagreeing.  ;-)

I totally agree that an ice pack is a good choice, but my experience is the regular ones are crap and don't last long.  You can use a half or one gallon milk/juice container, but the 1 gal is an akward size.  I found a water container that's rectangular - roughly 3.5" x 8" x 10" and freeze water in that for a longlasting cool.  The rectantular shape is good for a cooler.  If I were going to keep shrooms in a cooler for 24-48 I'd probably leave it open overnight if it were cool...  As long as there's plenty of airspace in the cooler you're probably fine, but if you pack it close it's a problem.  This container will keep ice in it for around 24-48 in a smaller cooler depending on ambient.

No running around to find and pay for dry ice, neither.  ;-)  All I've ever bought had a weight marked on the newspaper it was wrapped in, and that's what I paid, despite the fact that half of it had already evapped off.

yes, for this it is totally overkill... but if your gonna be away for 3-4 days, its a good strategy... so far as Ice pack options, frozen juice is good cause by the time your headed home, it'll be ready to drink!
-but for that matter too, any sealed off expandable container of frozen liquid works as a freeze pack.... Water filled Ziploc, Half Gallon of Apple Juice (Paper or plastic jug), Tupperware full of jello, whatever works for you.

All seems like so much overkill to me.

why not just let them start drying out?

Because they asked how to keep them nice and fresh.

Depends on the type of mushroom, the weather, and what the picker wants.
And this is why fresh gourmet mushrooms that end up in stores look like complete crap.
Dried out, busted and just awful looking.. Regular commercial hunters never take the time to care for their harvest.
Personally, I like to keep them in optimum conditions until I eat them... Which is why my mushrooms look amazing weeks into storage... I take the time if I'm not headed home that evening...  If its just for the day, then all I bring is paper bags.

They are over-nighting in Texas and I have no idea what kind of mushrooms they are going for... likely cubes... Considering its still really warm, boarder-line hot out there, if they want to keep them fresh for the 4 hour drive home the next day, I would suggest keeping them cooled...

Personally, eating them fresh is much better than eating them dried.
Stronger.
Tastier.
Easier to Stomach (For me)

In checking... looks like a good place to hunt this weekend

I honestly don't mind drying them out, but how exactly do you do that? It will be hot/humid and the car won't be cool/ventilatd in the trunk... Last time i went hunting by the time I got home many of the mushrooms were soggy/mushy. I just want them to be in good edible shape...dry or not.

I'll just do the cooler thing. Yea its been raining like crazy out there it looks like! I did see all of the rain this weekend, but since I'm going tonight hopefully conditions will still be ripe! ::D

Are you going for cubes?

how are you staying over-night?
Hotel? Camping? Friends place that wont mind mushrooms?

When I hunt my magics, I usually wash them and then lay them out to dry as soon as possible... when I plan to be away from home for several days, I bring this portable fan with me, and use a short-sided cardboard box... i lay them out in the box and set the fan on a book or something, aimed down into the box... you can even have the fan going in the box for the drive home... the heat out there does concern me.. it might be easier to just do the cooler with a frozen bottle of juice wrapped in a towel.

Yea cubes ... not staying anywhere, leaving around 2am tonight to get there around 6am sun up... to start looking. Then in the afternoon start to drive back

That's why I'm trying to figure best way to store since we will be in the car whole time and not inside really

Don't freeze them. This will destroy them. You will have pure black cubes
if you freeze them.
