Re: Ketamine [Re: eMpire420]

I about went through the roof yesterday with this doctor. Wanted me on two SSRIs, then yesterday it was lamictal. Never!  So not so sure about ketamine from him. I'm not bipolar. And if he wants me on lamictal?  Must think I am. Very very upsetting. My brother is bipolar. To hint that I am pierces my heart. And that's not good. I'm depressed but no mania ever. Lamictal?  Really?  Not so sure about the whole thing. He wants me on ADHD meds too. I'm not ADHD Adderall XR made me crazy. So now I'm not sure about ketamine. What do y'all think?  Please help me.

GirlfromGA, would you be willing to have a private discussion?  I tried to leave you a PM but this forum engine is somewhat confusing.  I have been a ketamine patient for about a year with multiple doctors, and I might be able to offer you some useful thoughts given your situation.  In case you didn't get my PM, I've set up a throwaway email you can use to contact me, inceptiro-ks@yahoo.com.

In the meantime...  Is the doctor hesitating on giving you ketamine now?  Or are you hesitating because you're upset about his advice on lamictal, ADHD meds, etc?  If he still wants you to get a ketamine infusion, I suggest you do.  You can always decline his other suggestions.

Personally I would recommend the ketamine infusions if your doctor is willing to give it to you. After my (recreational) ketamine experiences I always felt refreshed and more optimistic the next day, and with lingering optimism after that. If you're researching the idea I recommend this link: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/threads/669468-Experience-with-ketamine-therapy-for-depression it's someone elses personal experience with ketamine therapy for depression, you may find it interesting.

My only concern is that in your signature you say you're tapering Valium, and I personally would not recommend mixing ketamine and valium (even with a tolerance) due to respiratory depression of both the ketamine and valium (ketamine isn't a huge respiratory depressant but I err on the side of caution). If it's in a clinical setting I'd let them know, if this becomes an illicit personal endeavor, I'd recommend having a friend watch you, and start with low doses.

Either way I hope you overcome your depression.

What about mxe? I don't know much about disassociatives. Isn't mxe also supposed to be a miracle drug for depression?

Not trying to sway you in one way or the other... but, you should do some research. Lamictal is not solely prescribed for biopolar, nor Adderall for ADHD. Both meds are used routinely (off label) as adjuncts to treat drug refractive depression. Ultimately up to you, but make an informed decision.

He knows I'm tapering Valium. He didn't seem that concerned about the interaction.

You know what?  I might be depressed from the Valium!  But I spoke to him this morning said look. You don't have to take a thing I suggest. What I do think you need (forget about the other stuff) is ketamine. So where I go from here not sure. I AM depressed. No doubt. And he's gotten awfully forceful about ketamine--now. So maybe I do need to try it.

Ketadvocate is the nicest person I've ever talked too. My doctor is in New York City, be back to Boston soon. My husband is being vicious on me about the cost of ketamine but good heavens isn't it better than to help me or feeling that I want to die at any second?  That's how depressed I am. So that's why I'm not there yet. He wanted (doctor) on SSRI too. Those days are over for me!  So he's fine with no SSRI or lamictal. Let's just hope I get to him.

I'm curious how much ketamine goes for when you get it through a doctor...  And isn't it tiny doses per day that they prescribe?  I'm surprised it would be expensive.  Actually, let me rephrase that.  I'm not surprised that they make it as expensive as possible, but I don't think it would need to be very expensive...

Hi GirlfromGA.  You are too kind -- it was a pleasure to talk to you.  I think your doctor is absolutely right in urging you to get ketamine treatment.  But if money (or tension with your husband about it) is preventing you from following your doctor's advice, please remember you are lucky to live just a few miles from the most inexpensive ketamine doctor in the country, as far as I can tell.  Remember you can find him listed here http://www.ketaminenetwork.org/46-2. ; Ketamine works exactly the same way whether you get it from your doctor, or my doctor, or the doctor in Atlanta who is very affordable.  With the doctor in Atlanta, you don't have to sign up for a multiple-infusion package.  He will be willing to treat you with a single infusion to see how you respond first.  I really am NOT discouraging you from going to the doc you already know and love, but perhaps this might be a way to try ketamine, quickly, for less $, so you can do it with more support from your husband.  Then you can always go to your doc in Boston for more, or you'll have the option of continuing with the local doc.  I don't belong in between you and your doctor -- I just want to see you find a way to get the treatment, because you need it.  Good luck to you!

Shpongle1, the cost of a single infusion is generally a few hundred dollars.  There are some who charge FAR more, like $2000 per infusion, but I would steer clear of them.  Also, some doctors require you to pay for multiple infusions up front, instead of trying a single infusion first to measure your response.  Yes, the doses are tiny.  But the cost of the ketamine is only a small part of the doctor's price tag.  I'm going to post a full discussion about this topic on the Ketamine Advocacy Network website (www.ketaminenetwork.org) in the next few days so I'll stop there for now.

Wow!  That's absurd.  No wonder some people may try self medicating themselves.  Ketamine is really, really cheap compared to that.  Not that I would encourage anyone to self medicate, but it makes sense with prices that outrageous.

Well good news!  I am going.  Ugh it is $6000 for 8 infusions.  But my husband realized this is my life.  He is an airline captain we have no children.  :-(  There is zero reason he cannot help me with this.  So finally he is cool with it.  I believe I am going next week.  Ketadvocate thanks again, thanks to all of you.  I will let you know how it goes.  And the reason I put that :-( after no children is because I really wanted them.  At least one.  My husband, 57, me just turned 36 thought he could but just said he could not.  So I will not be a mom.  This is partially why I am so depressed.  Not all of it, something else is going on with my brain (what I do not know) I am just so sad all the time.  He did put me on very very low dose Elavil for the moment.  Let's hope ketamine really helps me!

So it's $6,000 for 8 infusions, which initially sounds ridiculous but how much ketamine is in an infusion?  How long does one infusion last?

Try mushrooms for treating your depression. There are numerous reports that try work and in my case they worked miracles. I've never tried ketamine so I can't be sure about that. I'm not sure what kinda dose a doc will give you but it'll probably be weak. I've never known docs to suggest ketamine, sounds strange to me. Hope it works for ya. And yes, SSRIs suck.

I do not think this doctor does single infusions.  But if he did, I believe it would be around $750.  I want to say (and my memory is bad due to Valium at the moment!) he told me the infusion lasts 45 minutes.  I asked him how long (or if it was even possible) to drive after infusion as I will be in Boston area alone.  Per him, the recovery period after infusion is short.  He said he has people that go back to work about 2 hours after infusion!

It sounds like that it is a psychededelic because he told me there is absolutely no chance I will not hallucinate during infusion.  It will be interesting to me then as I have never have experienced anything like that!

Yes SSRI/SNRI have to be the worst drugs on the planet.  The most recent experience with me and getting off Paxil--it was SO hard.  And really truly it was for nothing.  Paxil did not do much for me as far as depression (none of them do) and it was SO hard to get off of.  It was so much harder to get off that then even the 90-100mg of hydrocodone I used to take.  Which is crazy!  Opiate withdrawal is generally terrible.  Paxil was worse, (at least opiates for a while did something for me) than opiate withdrawal!

I cannot to wait to leave to get these infusions.  He is an awesome doctor, very good to me.  Does not push meds on me, although he has suggested them.  Never said I HAD to take them.  And as far as counseling, good lord.  There is just no one better.  And sometimes I really do need someone to talk to!  Think we all do!  He completely took over my Valium taper after I realized there was so not so good some stuff with the taper doc.  So he is doing it.  He has even told me if I need to he is willing to keep me on benzo as long as I need it (I have had massive panic/agoraphobia lately.  No one else on this planet would ever say that!  I do not know if I need that but it is nice to at least know someone cares that much about me that if I do need benzo because I do not want to live in panic he is willing to be there.  Cannot say enough about him.  Cannot say enough that I am so glad I found a place (here) filled with cool people so like me!!!

He said to me yesterday angel I am going to make sure this is the best year of your life.  You have been through so much, do not deserve anything but the best year ever.  And I am going to help you get there.  I am telling you that NO doctor has ever said a thing like that to me.  It was so comforting, so sweet.  I really needed to hear something like that because I have been all panicky and depressed lately.  I still cannot believe he said that, and that I am as lucky as I am!  I have been through too much in my life, probably why I ended up drinking too much then taking so much opiate.  In his (very) competent hands I feel safe.  Really safe.  And it is nice.  I just wish he lived in Atlanta.  But easy enough for me to get to him my husband is an airline captain.  Just go to the airport and get on a plane to Boston!
