10 Day Juice Fast
#18907028 - 09/29/13 12:49 PM (10 years, 4 months ago) |

After watching the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead I decided to try a ten day fast consuming only this juice for sustenance: 1 Large handful of kale 3 Stalks of celery 1/2 a cucumber 1/2 a Lemon 2 Granny Smith apples
This fast is as much to do a cell cleanse within my body as it is a mental toughness check. I've struggled with food addiction in my past and have recently gotten into better shape than I've ever been in my life. If I can last the ten days, I feel comfortable that my days of overeating are behind me.
I'm currently eclipsing the 24 hr. mark and so far it's not so bad. Although it feels like I'm getting a cold. My nose started running like not even two hours after I started the fast. Has anyone done a juice fast? And if so is this normal detox symptoms? Also, some words of encouragement would be appreciated
Much love y'all

I used to be a Raw food chef, and know all about these fasts and juicing.
and I would NOT recommend a 10 day green juice fast. You will become very irritable as your blood sugar levels will go crazy. Plus green juice doesnt have sufficient calories to maintain your body.
Honestly, after trying them myself, and talking with many leading individuals in this field including other raw chefs, and holistic nutrionists. A 10 day fast is too much.
The biggest real benefit of a juice fast is for habitual over eaters. Over eating causes the stomach to stretch, so it takes more food to feel full. A juice fast of only 5 days will be enough to shrink your stomach back.
Simply put, a ten day juice fast is too long, long enough for negative side effects to occur.
A five day fast will gain you the benefits, without the negative effects.

I too bought a juicer years ago after watching the same movie
I never did the complete fasting thing, as I am considered "under weight" for my height. But when you consume the juice from what you have above (I used a base of carrots) it sure does get you amped up. Do you notice a burst of energy when you drink it?
If nothing else, I hope you make a note here everyday so we can see how it affects the different aspects of your life, AND if by the 10th day, you feel great. It will take a lot of will power and you will gain much respect from yourself plus plenty of others who would like to cleanse/detox.

Throw some parsely in that green juice, and some ginger for digestion.
Also asides from green juices. Beet juices with lots of ginger and very good for you.
Just to note, I wasnt bashing juicing, or juice fasting. Just extended juice fasting.
One of my favourites though is carrot+pear+ginger+dash cayenne Great kick and really gets the day going.

Yeah, they are hard to digest sometimes and would make me really gassy so I'd add lots of ginger to mine.
Also, you have to be careful with juicing lots of raw kale if you have a predisposition to kidney stones because raw kale is very high in oxalate. Which binds to calcium to form calcium oxalate and can cause stones.
Same reason to avoid kale with your calcium sources.
Also dont juice spinach, as it is extremely high in oxalate, and this is why the calcium in spinach isnt actually bioavailable. .

Have you ever tried just drinking kale juice? Its so nasty! I usually will mix carrots and a cucumber w it to give it more fluid and of course a lemon so its not so....gross green tasting.

Edible brought up a good point, if juicing, don't forget about keeping water intake high, as it will tax the kidneys
I thought adding lemon and ginger was a given for any recipe
carrots, parsely, ginger, kale, lemon, and a wedge of green apple was my go-to. I can only imagine what it did to blood sugar lol it will definitely get you going
what do you think is a good recipe utilizing beets, I never cared much for them on their own. Also, cayenne would be interesting...

I've tried your ginger advice and it's definitely helped the load on my stomach. Even for just soothing what I can imagine are hunger pains it has done wonders.
I'm letting off some of the nastiest fart lmao... it's not been terribly bad. Last night I was very irritable and wanted solid food so bad. But today the hunger is manageable and I went and worked an 8 hour day doing construction with only juice for lunch, no problems with energy.
I've been told that the first 1-3 days are definitely the worst, I'm almost done with that part. Ready to get to the rewards of this crazy idea that's for sure

After reading this and everything else you've posted on this thread I've decided that you definitely know your shit and wouldn't lead me astray. So I've decided to compromise and do a 6 day fast. Like I said in my OP, this is more of a mental test for me than it is a health concern. I'm a very healthy person physically, but so far this has been a very spiritual experience, which is exactly what I need in my life right now. I figure another 4 1/2 days and I'll be able to feel good with my accomplishment.

I found huge benefits from juicing. It's a great way to start your day because of the energy it gives you and stuff like kale is great at detoxing the body.
Today I had just straight kale juice, but usually I go carrots + celery + spinach + ginger + kale

You'll be fine, I did a 20 day water fast last summer as a way of cleaning my body of chemicals and I was able to functional like I would normally, except that my heart would race a bit after long walks

Yeah it is pretty nasty. When I was at the restaurant, all the left over bits of greens from prepping them for service, I would save all the bits and juice them, sometimes it would have a lot of collard greens in it, that stuff was the worst.
I've made some V-8 inspired juices as well, soooo amazing. Like V-8 but bright and fresh, and not as salty. But I'd add a pinch for flavour.

Do you think eating the nuts beforehand help regulate blood sugars?

I've begun using Bell peppers instead of cucumbers. I like the nice tart note that it adds to the juice.
I understand the concept behind what I'm doing to my body with this fast, but I'm still in the dark as to what micro-nutrients are in each of the fruits and vegetables. Anyone got somewhere with info on what cucumbers and bell peppers have in them so I might be able to determine what this change is doing to the nutritional values?

make sure you brush your teeth frequently throughout the day. juice fasts tend to weaken your teeth enamel from all the acids in the fruits.
don't over do anything and just listen your body. good luck
