CAN! NOT IS! CAN steam be hotter then water.

i didnt ask if water can evaporate... :havesomesantorum:

I think his point is that if water comes into contact with something hot enough, the steam it produces will be far hotter than 212F.

There are many environments where steam will be unable to condense into water. If it was then heated above 212F it would be hotter than that.........

Its not hotter, The steam is simply particles of water transforming from liquid to gas. Gas molecules and like single floating particles, while liquids are bound together but to the extent of a solid. Now the particles become so full of energy and get so "excited" that they break away from the liquid bond. So its still the same particles in the steam, there just a different form of matter.

If your talking about why steam hotter, its because wet heat burns MUCH faster than dry heat to humans.

this seems to be a great debate. who can end this argument.

not including atmosphere. water can get hotter then 212 at higher pressure. thats not what were talking about.

can steam be hotter then boiling water at the same pressure.

i thought that the steam/boiling tek works off the principle that steam gets hotter then boiling water.

i may be wrong. whats the truth.

can steam be hotter then 212?

The gasses in the atmosphere can have much higher temps than their boiling point at normal pressure, why not water?

there seems every body has there own opinion. its about half and half right now.

i think it can. its stupid to think that H20 cant physically be hotter then 212. it just cant be hotter then 212 at a liquid state.

the whole reason i started this thread is because me and mush4brains couldn't agree.

Actually it can be hotter than 212 F in a liquid state, as stated throughout the thread. It can even happen at atmospheric pressure under certain conditions (e.g. microwaving distilled water.)

Edit: video was repost

NWlight answered it with the graph and explanation. Answer = yes.

But again, assuming these starting conditions for a volume of water:

Pressure = 1 atmosphere
Temperature = 77°F

Adding heat causes the temperature of the water to increase until it reaches boiling point (212°F). Between this point and total evaporation, additional heat is described as 'latent' (as opposed to 'sensible heat') because it doesn't cause any temperature change (i.e. you can't 'sense' it); rather it contributes to phase change. So as long as there's a mixture of gas and liquid - the (average) temperature won't go beyond 212°F - both the water and steam will be the same temperature. Then, once all of the water has become steam - the temperature will rise beyond 212°C and become 'superheated'. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superheated_steam
