UPDATED. New pics of Formitopsis pinicola
    #18916690 - 10/01/13 03:05 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

found in NE Oh. grass next to a dead tree stump  the other on dead tree.
1. I believe either Amanita vaginata, or Xerula sp.

2. Some kind of wood loving polypore. This was as close as I could get to it.

Your first one kinda looks like Xerula Radicata, does it have a white print?

If it's Radicata then it's edible, but it's up to you if you want to eat them. I've eaten one before there not particularly special.

Your polypore is most likely Ganoderma applanatum.

That polypore is awesome! It looks like the tree fell over and it's growth pattern changed with it. I don't think it's G. applanatum though.

Yeah I think so too. I saw it riding down the road and made a mental note to go check it out. Ive passed it a bunch of times! It looks almost like a tree burl coming out of the tree that the mushroom grew off of. Then I thought no wait thats the older mushroom that died off and the new ones are starting out of it. I really like this photo but wish I had got a better one. maybe tomorrow I will put on some jeans and wade through the jaggers for a better shot

Fomitopsis pinicola.  Fer sure.

Sketch, that's an amazing config - dammit, man, borrow a good cam and tripod and get a great shot of that.  It's worthy.  I'd hang it on my wall, the pic and the fungus.  ;-)  But it's so pretty where it is.

Why couldn't you get to it?  Swamp, too high, guarded by jabbberwockies, what???

"Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats."

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

Super patch of jaggers guarding it lol. Ty i am planning on getting a better photo of it tomorrow. Might be good like you said framed! I took the lifeproof case off my ipad and think it will take clearer pics, especially with a tripod.
