Imagine this a lot more darker. Had to look sharp to pick up purple color out. Of course image is brightened. Note fur like cap & wide base of stem.

Cortinarius, someone else may be able to get a more specific ID. You should try mushroom observer too, there are some knowledgeable people on European fungi there.

Thanks for tip.
tmp: Cortinarius violaceus http://www.svims.ca/council/Cortin.htm, scroll down ... apparently Cortinarius hercynicus has more or less same look.

I'm not sure that American key using European names will be completely accurate for you.

What is the taste of the cap like? Habitat - tree species? KOH? I'm using Funga Nordica - we might be able to narrow it down to a couple species.

Was looking old & poisonus so I would not dare to taste it. Mixed woods, so that info can't help (dedicious/confiner)
Local guy says it is Cortinarius violaceus.

That sounds about right to me. C. violaceus grows in symbiosis with deciduous trees, C. hercynicus with conifers. Both grow in Europe, so I'd say your species just depends on the type of tree it was associated with.

You can taste test deadly mushrooms as long as you spit it out afterwards.
What did they smell like? Cedar?

You have to call it that, with those gills and the slender stem. Very pretty!

Local guy is right. It can apparently grow with both conifer and deciduous trees, according to Michael Kuo.

How many choices are there in there?

Only two, actually. I didn't know where to start. Cortinarius Subgen. Cortinarius sect. Cortinarius - C. violaceus and C. harcyicus.

That's funny, one of the first mushrooms I found when I started getting interested in mycology was all purple so I automatically assumed it shouldn't be edible. Some ID Keys later, turns out it was a Clitocybe nuda
