Today I sat down to do an interview with Memes.  Here's how things transpired and happened......

Learyfan arrives at Memes' house in a car formerly owned by Pink Floyd.

Learyfan gets out of the car and begins chanting "om shivaya" over and over in a megaphone toward Memes' house.

After a short discussion, Memes agrees to do an interview if Learyfan will quit it.

Learyfan hands Memes a piece of paper that contains his objective and both men get back into the car.  Learyfan hits the gas and the Enter/World Spirit style interview is underway..

Quote:

Q:  So Memes, what brings you to The Shroomery?

A: A: General interest.  A friend back in college was bullshitting about wanting to grow bud, but his life situation wasn’t aligned with the constraints of such a grow – so one afternoon we bullshitted around on the web.  Ended up here, haven’t really left.

Believe it or not, it was actually a friend who wanted to grow buds.  I was just the kid who knew his way around the internet – he couldn’t spell “college” (yes, I saw him type it Collage.)

Q:  What are your favorite parts of The Shroomery?

A: It’s active, consistent and high-quality userbase.  It’s organization.  And it’s constant progression.  I can’t name the specific changes that have occurred over the years I’ve been here, but I know they’re both numerous and substantive.

As far as forums go, I group my viewing/checking/replying consistency in tiers:
Tier 1:  Pub, P&MWB, Vet Lounge (when theres activity), Money Matters
Tier 2: Sports, Gaming, Polit Discussion, Gathering/Travel
Tier 3: All others

Q:  When did you first try marijuana?

A: 18.  There are a few reasons I avoided it in high school.  Looking back, nearly all of them were foolish – but the end result was that I entered college in a pretty good position with a nice set of priorities.  Not to imply that one can’t enjoy use of anything at any age and still end up with the same results.  Correlation is not causation.

As it turns out, marijuana is unique in helping me reach homeostasis – I am naturally quite neurotic, overly energetic, OCD and ADHD (can one be both?  I contest yes.  I avoided doctors my whole life, so no formal diagnosis exists).

Q:  When did you first try psychedelics, which one was it and what was your first experience like?

A: Mushrooms - all of my closest friends in a wonderfully secure, warm, exploratory environment.  Old house, no noise restrictions.  My headspace at the time was still pretty ignorant (I’m sure it still is), I wasn’t in it for any personal development reasons.  It was unplanned and entirely compulsive (this is a trend in my life) but it played out and ended wonderfully.

Q:  What was your best psychedelic experience like?

A: [TL;DR ALERT!  I got carried away with this story.  I typed it out more for me, not for you.  Long story short.  I took a little bit of LSD and had a good time, now I’m calm and happy.  Surprise, right? [/TL;DR]

_______________________________________
My psychedelic experiences since that first trip have always been a battle for control.  As you may have discerned from my previous statements, I am a hyper-planner.  Everything is in its place, set up, with all contingencies analyzed and prepared for, always.  It’s that weird compulsion that both creates and relieves stress.  Trips are consequently quite the event, as my ego/brain has always battled for the reins.  I’ve always been pretty reactive to any/all substances, so I’ve never been a heavy doser.  Those kids that show up to their first dead show, eat a ten strip and lose face?  Not me.  I have respect for that “go for it” approach to life, but am too much of a pussy to live by it.

Recently I had a number of doses laying around and was getting ready for the workingman’s set at Lockn.  Just had some wow from a festival earlier this summer and a single strong hit that I received from an old friend.  I had tripped the night before and, in typical memes fashion, decided to plan my approach to the night’s trip (I plan!  Remember?  Plan plan plan!).  I’ll take some wow, take that single about an hour later, then take the rest of the wow after that.  I decided to phase-in my trip because I had been eating horribly and I tend to get stomach issues on the come-up (anxiety related, undoubtedly).

Well, took the first but after taking the 2nd, I fumbled the last segment and lost it in the field.  Sad face.  It was lost forever.  No biggy – I knew I’d be set (I had eaten the wow the night before, a hit about 130% larger than my initial dose the second night).  My initial hit could already be felt, I had no concern for lack of effect.  My plans were altered, but not ruined in the slightest.  Well, I told a friend the story, and a few minutes later her husband showed up asking me if I liked candy.  Duh, of course I like candy.  The question seemed a bit out of the ordinary – but I was dosed and in a field with a bunch of goddamn hippies, nothing is strange!  He comes back with some candy and tells me to open up.  Yum.  How delicious.  How tasty and juicy and scrumptious.  I was spun at this point, and all the flavors were bombarding my mouth, saturating my senses, absorbing my thoughts while the music wailed behind the screen of my closed eyelids.

I’m chewing.  Enjoying.  Then, Remembering.  These candies are dosed.  Oh, fuck.

Remember all that OCDness?  All those plans?  All that control?  That battle for the reins?  Welp, I dropped them beneath the horse-cart and it looked like I was goin’ for a ride.  The following hours were full of glory.  I segregated myself from my group and went up close, surrounded by old heads.  I planted my feet and didn’t move for 4 hours.  In and out of my bodily consciousness, occasionally coming back down into my head to make sure I was still displaying a positive and friendly facial expression (each time failing to discern what my face was actually doing [weeks later I re-met a stranger who hugged me during that show, who confirmed my face was in an expression of complete ecstasy, with tears of joy streaming down intermittently]).  Specifics are few, but the set blew me away and the overarching result was absolute tranquility – true serenity.  I’ve been dealing with some things in life, the same things every man deals with.  This workingman’s set spoke right to me (don’t they always?)

The set was spent somewhere else.  I experienced the show, but wasn’t all there.  The band was driving, I was in the back seat, reading the Book of Life and falling in love with the narrative.  My ego, anxieties, fears and hopes and dreams, future plans and past regrets all melted away.  My body was exhibiting a relaxed nature that I had never felt before.  No tension.  No manic thoughts.  No hypervigilant stream of consciousness planning or analyzing or debating.  Only the desire to leave every person I interacted with in a better place than when I found them.  The post-peak plateau was long and strong.  My serenity didn’t fade.  Not as the trip ended, or the next day, or the next week.  It’s certainly not at trip-strength as I sit here typing, but I have not experienced my daily anxieties since that trip.  I know that the clear and glorious perception we have of the world during a dose tends to fade as we re-enter our daily lives and get bombarded by the nuances of our egocentric culture, but I think (and hope) that this shift has more permanence.

It’s amazing the experiences one can have, even without doses of epic proportions.

Q:  How many roads must a man walk down before you can call him a man?

A: Every man is a man in my eyes.  Whether he knows it or not, I know him as such.  The most callow, most despicable, sociopathic fuckwits are still just as much a man as I am.  We’re all just extensions of one another.  Something made that poor sad soul the way he is today.  Odds are, that experience was painful for them.  I’m sorry they had to experience it.  Someone who suffered a horrible horrible circumstance once told me “Hurt people hurt people.”  They had forgiven it.  It was a big dose of “whoa” for me.

For every exhibition of human inadequacy, for every deplorable act that fills you with bloodlust and rage, there exists a polar opposite – a yang to their evil yin.  I’m blessed enough to have had an experience largely void of negative events.  As a result, I’m in a very good situation and can consequently find it very easy to be incredibly positive.  It’s so bad it annoys some people.  I think that’s OK, because I’m annoyed by all the evil in the world.

So, a man is a man no matter what.  Who am I to judge?  I’m just a man.

Q:  What is your favorite drug?

A: LSD.

Q:  What's the most LSD you've ever seen in person?

A: Nothing special.  I’m not a kingpin and haven’t ever been incredibly deep in any counterculture (note, that doesn’t mean I’m not saturated in counterculture – breadth is not depth).  A friend in college had a pack of sheets at the Deadheads for Obama show up at Penn State.  Didn’t ask how many, just took what I wanted when one got passed to me – good man, he was.

Q:  Which drug do you wish you could try, but haven't?

A: DMT.  I have had a few chances in my life, but the circumstances have never been where I’d like them to be.  This summer I was hanging out with some very dear friends and had an opportunity, but my body was shutting down from days of fun and I didn’t want to take that dive in such poor physical condition.

I’ve read a lot on it, and heard a multitude of rave reviews from all manner of folk, and I’m excited to learn what it has to teach.

Q:  Which drug have you tried, but wish you hadn't?

A: None here.  Too controlling.  In high school one of the reasons I didn’t smoke weed is because I knew I’d LOVE it.  Turns out, I LOVE it.  I’ve since avoided a few drugs as a result.  Coke and heroin are the main ones I have wholesale avoided [although who hasn’t taken the occasional opoiate].  I know I’d enjoy them extensively. Others, I haven’t really come into contact with.

Q:  What is your favorite beer?

A: Chimay Triple

Q:  Do you play video games at all?  If so, which are your favorite?

A:

This game was a substantive part of my early highschool years.  I was the oldest sibling, so friends who were substantively older than me were few and far between.  I couldn’t drive, and didn’t want to bother people by asking them to come pick me up.  You could probably call that unsocial.

Either way, I attribute at least half of my intellectual abilities to this game alone.  As you could tell from the video, it requires:
  • Reflexes:  As you can see, you can move pieces out of the way if something is coming to take them.  Think quick!
  • Foresight:  think chess is hard to calculate?  Those pieces stay still after the opponent moves them, and he can only do one at a time.  Imagine trying to analyze your queenside defense when black can LITERALLY shift all of his pieces over to attack there at a single point.  There are “combo moves” where one player would seemingly have no viable attack or support on a given square, but with a shift of multiple pieces, would suddenly have taken material AND gained a secure position (black makes a strong one on curtains at 0:50 on c4 and d3.  Retreating the black knight on d4 immediately yields a near-impregnable position… as you see, it wins him the game).
  • Micro-Coordination:  the initial move sequence – or “opening” [I used nestrellov’s] was very important, as center control is a prime theme in chess, and as you are both able to move at the same time, getting out there is important.  Note:  this allows me to do my job extremely efficiently.  Seriously.

Curtains was an IM over in Europe (international master, for you non-chess nerds).  I beat them a few times, but that’s only due to the laws of statistics, they’d waste me 8/10 games.

NOTE:  The graphics were NOT that bad on my computer.  I don’t know where devilant is from, but my graphics were of the same quality as this game:

(Note, this is a fast-fourway game.  It is not sped up.  This is real time.  It’s white and black vs. green and red.)

That was a lot.  I got carried away.  I loved that game.  It was the “game of the month” for some game-aggregating website that me and my nerd friend would incessantly frequent during our typing classes in 9th and 10th grade (was at 80wpm back then anyways.  Work was done in 5min.  45 left to play).  Watched it grow from just 1v1 standard pace (like the first video), to 2v2, to bughouse, crazyhouse, added new games (youtube Sumo Volleyball).  Was the first mod of it’s first forum, on like, vBulletin 1 (or some similar rudimentary organization system), and the 8 year olds that trolled the internet back then were just as troll-y, but deleting things was not as convenient.

Whatever, I rambled.  That’s the point of a stoned interview in a Pink Floyd car, right LF?

Q:  Have you ever known someone who has gone to jail/prison for a long time on a drug charge or charges?

A: I’ve had a number of friends & acquaintances go to jail for moderate lengths of time, but never anyone extremely close to me – thankfully.  My dearest friends and I have been incredibly lucky in our debauchery.

Q:  Based on the way things are going, when do you think marijuana will be either legal on the federal level or legal in almost every state?

A: Since your question asks about legal marijuana, I’ll answer explicitly and say:  25 years.  That being said, I would not be at all surprised if it were sooner than that.  Medical marijuana seems to be something that is being put on the ballot in more and more states, and is “rolling down the hill” as some might say.  In politics, I like to think of issues rolling “to the hill” instead of “down” it (lol, just made that up but I like it).  This MM legislation should, hopefully, just become so saturated throughout the country that the federal government would be forced to acknowledge mary jane as medical relevant, and thus – work towards removing it from schedule 1.

At this point, I don’t see full legality as being far behind, but I know politicians like to avoid extreme slippery slopes, so I don’t expect it to be a full-on domino effect.

Q:  What's the most marijuana you've seen at one time?

A: 5lb.  A kid down the street.  Used to let me come over and pick out whatever nugs I wanted.  It was like Christmas, except the present was the trees.

Q:  If you could make one change to The Shroomery, what would it be?

A:  I have no issues with it.  It is a microcosm of the word.

Q:  What's the best book you've ever read?

A: Pillars of the Earth.  Go get it from the library.

Q:  If you could meet one psychedelic/counterculture icon, who would it be and why?

A: :todcasil:

Casil.  He’s not world renown, but he has an icon here on the Shroomery so I think my choice applies within the question’s constraints.  He always had the best and most positive posts (in my memory.  I have not analyzed them explicitly).  I perceived him as being loved, and as giving love, and since I only knew him through the internet and never had to see any negatives – I see him as being an embodiment of what I strive for, to leave all those I touch with a smile on their face.  No man is perfect, and I didn’t know him personally at all.  So don’t take my praise of him as anything more than a love of an ideal.  All men have demons, but I never saw his.  Just pictures of him and his daughters playing dress up and loving life.

When the Casil gathering started forming, and I saw the attendance list, I knew I had to go.  One of the best decisions ever.  The people in attendance, the vibe that ensued, the memories we created, were a beautiful thing.

I’d love to meet Casil.  I look forward to reuniting with him when my drop hits the pond.

Q:  What would you say is the most inspiring/heart warming/beautiful thing you ever saw at a drug party/festival/rave?

A: Strangers stopping strangers, just to shake their hand.  Everybody’s playing in the heart of gold band.

I love it when people can embrace a stranger as their brother.  To give true radiating love.  No judgment, no pain.  It’s why I don’t have any real savings, and spend every summer in as many giant fields as possible surrounded by my family.

Q:  What is the worst thing you ever saw at a drug party/festival/rave or in the drug game in general?

A: I don’t like seeing people having extreme medical problems due to drugs.  I don’t want to call them overdoses, because I was always inebriated at the time and don’t know anything medically…. But those situations at shows and fests where someone either collapses, or is shaking on the ground, or is wholly unresponsive, etc.  You’re concerned, you’re mortified, but the med help is notified and either (a) present, or (b) en route, and you’re just left helplessly hoping.

Q:  What is the craziest thing you ever saw at a drug party/festival/rave?

A:
Everybody’s always talking about XYZ combination of drugs, or some magical feat of inebriation, but the thing that sticks out in my head is a Jack Johnson show.

“what?!?!?” you say to yourself  as you close out of this now illegitimate interview (haha).  No, but really.  Some motherfuckers climbed a tree.  But one just didn’t stop.  It was a big big tree.  He went up up up up.  As a kid, I liked to daydream about climbing to the top of a tree, and sticking my head out the top of it, like a squirrel from a hedge.  But it could never come to fruition because you’d get 3/4 up the way every tree and the branches would get so thin that you just KNEW they couldn’t support you.

Yeah, didn’t seem to apply to this kid/monkeyman.

[interjection.  I typed that, and then said to myself “fuck, I hope I can find pictures of this on the internet.  Google image searched.  Fail.  Youtube search.  Up comes a jack Johnson bonnaroo 2005 video.  Fuck, it’s only 00:17 seconds long.  Well, lets see if maybe they pan the crowd and show the tree.  Nope, but lol, you can hear someone comment about it in the background.]

Quote:

Some fun highlights: during Jack Johnson, people started climbing a HUGE tree. One guy got up to the very top and jack gave him a shout out and when he started to climb higher jack was like - "Hey man you've already impressed us, don't hurt yourself!"

http://phishcoventry.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html

Why was I at a Jack Johnson show?  I don't know.  Maybe nobody else was playign at that point, or maybe i was just following the group.  i don't like him.

Q:  What are your spiritual beliefs?

A:
Quote:

I’d love to meet Casil.  I look forward to reuniting with him when my drop hits the pond.

I’ve had epiphany after epiphany on any number of drugs and on no drugs.  That idea  that Chinacat presented and you paraphrased in this post has always stuck with me and rung true.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1428611#1428611

Q:  What is your favorite Beatles song?

A:  Ob-la-di ob-la-da.  It’s a happy song with a catchy beat with lots of funky add-in sounds and effects.  What more could I want?  Very well produced.

Q:  Have you ever known someone, even casually, who was a psychedelic chemist?

A:  I had a friend in college who did a DMT extract from the mimosa rootbark or whatever (I don’t know that much about it).  That was my first of many opportunities to try it.  He was eccentric to say the least, and his process was not – how would you say – refined.  Looking back, I wasn’t ready for that experience yet.  I’m glad I have yet to dive in.  I’m more ready to learn now.

Q:  Who is the most interesting celebrity you've met?

A:  I once drove Derek Trucks down the road a few miles in a work van.  I was driving for a hotel and he needed a ride to his tour bus, which was parked down yonder at a free lot.  I knew he played with Allman Bros, but I didnt’ acknowledge just how fucking epic he really is musically, otherwise I would’ve praised him awkwardly the whole time.  Thank god, because instead we just had a nice normal conversation.  At the end I politely asked him to sign the back of a valet ticket I had in my pocket.

I gave it to my best friend, he was a bigger DT fan.  I don’t have it now, and occasionally I wish I did (I’m getting a twinge of it now, because I just saw him and susan at lockn and it was just so incredibly beautiful) – but I love my buddy and know he enjoys it.  I got the pleasure of meeting him, he should have the pleasure of the lasting fruits.  I get the memory of the interaction.

Xavier Rudd was also very nice.

Q:  How come you've changed the spelling of your Shroomery user name two or three times?

A:  I’ve only changed it once.  It’s to prevent mispronunciation.  “Me yams” is an incorrect pronunciation, but I’ve gotten it many times in my time here.  Note, I changed it right after the casil gathering – but nobody there misspoke it, just a timing coincidence.  It’s pronounced memes.

Q:  Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows.

A:  The shroomery already knows everything about me that nobody knows.  Just look back through my posts.  You are, in the aggregate, my greatest confidant.

Q:  What role, if any, do you think The Shroomery plays in global consciousness?

A: On a global scale, very little.  I think that individuals realize The Truth in a number of ways, and only one of them is through psychedelics and only one of those is mushrooms, of which this is merely one simple (albeit large) forum.  By “The Truth” I mean that general theme of:  don’t be a dick, love one another, try to be good.  General morality.  I don’t know what exactly global consciousness is, but that’s what I feel the end goal should be.

On an individual scale, this website is unimaginably beneficial to the world.  It has changed more lives in more ways than one can begin to fathom.  It’s strange, the way the world plays out.

Once upon a time, Ythan’s parents likely lived in different parts of the world from one another.  For X, Y or Z reason, they (or their parents, in the not-so-unlikely event that Ythan’s parents met each other in their own hometown) were brought to the same place, and eventually generated the individual that brought forth this portal through which I’ve met so many beautiful people.

And I’m glad for it.

Yes this is tymo - I just changed my name

Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to awake from that dream? How would you know the difference between that dream world and the real world?
