Frozen libs
    #18914791 - 10/01/13 06:34 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all. I'm glad to have finally registered after browsing as a guest for some time.

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered before.

I've got 800 libs in the freezer, frozen as fresh about 3 weeks ago, and I'm wondering if it is possible to dry them out?

Unfortunately fresh mushrooms and freezers don't mix well. You will probably be left with a big pile of mush when they thaw.

I think with them being frozen fresh, the ice inside will shred them up internally and they may turn to mush if defrosted. Can't speak first hand about libs but thats what I do to mash raspberrys to remove seeds easily. Freeze and defrost breaks down the raspberrys very well.

I'd say leave em as is until you're ready to eat them.  If you defrost them to dry them you might end up with a pile of black oxidised mush.

Next time just dry them out and leave em in an airtight jar with some desiccant. They'll store for years.

Couple of threads I've seen here about frozen cubensis say that when thawed, the resulting mush is completely inactive.

Just make tea

when ready to use.

Just like drying you may lose potency though.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll just save them for a brew then. I know they work that way. I've got another 800 drying now which I'm going to put into capsules. Easier to transport for camping/festivals.
I'll be sure to dry them from now on.

Powdering them increases surface area and can result in reduced potency due to oxidation.

I would suggest that powdering them to out into capsules isn't a good idea for long term storage... Leave whole and dry and powder as needed

Just my thoughts

I would toss the frozen mushrooms if you have a good supply of fresh
