Siddhartha is a good one for sure. I'd have to say 1984 was pretty sweet.

Well you should off course read Kant's Critique der reinen Vernunft. But this will probably take forever.

Another nice one that is basically Kantian but backs it up with knowledge gained from recent neurological research is Making up the Mind by Chris Frith.

I've been reading it from a philosophical point of view. Not religious if that helps you when you read it.

But I know what you mean, about the translation. Maybe one day I'll learn Chinese to get a better interpretation. Haha.

If you're going to go down the tao teh ching route, then definitely pick up a few copies or put some time into which translator you are going to read. Some of the stuff out there--thought I don't know chinese--nonetheless still seems like a shitty translation.

Another recommendation: The Complete Works of Chuang Tzu, translated by Burton Watson. A definite must read if you are into Toaism at all. One of my favorite sections/chapters would be section 23, btw.

the stranger by albert camus

^it's only the length of a novella (between 100-150 pages) but it touches on such fascinating themes and ideas relevant to existentialism (or more accurately, absurdism) i read it in a single sitting in the wee hours of the morning on stimulants, having foregone sleep. once i hit the halfway point i was so engrossed in it that there was no way i would be putting it down before finishing it. it instantly found a place among my favorite books, and affected the way i see the world & life. an important thing to mention is that even though it was written by a philosopher and touches on philosophical themes, it's a work of fiction, not some sort of treatise that is tedious to read & doesn't require any knowledge of complex abstract jargon to understand.

i also agree with those who recommended kurt vonnegut's body of work. if i had to choose i'd recommend cat's cradle in particular, that's my favorite of his books by quite a wide margin, but of course slaughter-house five, breakfast of champions, the sirens of titan & player piano are all great too.

locked in syndrome eh? sounds depressing.

or you could try the Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff (like winnie the poo, there is also a Tao of Piglet I think - I read both for martial arts study back in the day). It's eastern philosophy in western friendly format.

i love philip k. dick. 'the man in the high castle', 'flow my tears the policeman said' and 'do androids dream of electric sheep' are my favorites. i'm an evangelist for boom! studios's line for line adaptation of 'androids' for comics. excellent.

i'll also throw in voltaire's 'candide'. phiosophy texts are amazing, but they can make for very tedious and difficult reading even with an instructor to flesh out what ideas are being argued for and whatever other context is relevant to those texts. 'candide' however is a novel and it's a great starter for people new to philosophy. it's also just a damn good book.

i also really enjoyed reading j.d. sallinger's 'franny and zooey'. just like 'candide', funny and quite profound.

oh, and i'll also add that if you're wanting to start with philosophy and 'candide' doesn't seem like your thing, aristotle might be a good place to start. i'm a big fan of plato, but you have to be very acquainted with the themes and context associated with his dialogs or the important stuff will go right over your head. aristotle is much more straight forward and not as context dependent as plato or other philosophers.

This translation, from what I understand, comes pretty close to the real deal.

It had help in translation by Gia Fu Feng, a world-renowned Taoist translator/teacher who taught in the US.

Oh, also, if you are interested in reading some of the best philosophy that came out of the 20th century.....based on my (a nobody's) opinion, of course....than look into Wittgenstein. Philosophical Investigations, On Certainty, and the Tractatus would be good to read.

A lot of people I talk to about him seem to have never heard of him before, so here is the wiki link of him:

If you're into metaethics, check out "Whatever Happened to Good and Evil" by Russ Shafer-Landau. It provided some compelling arguments for an objective morality.

The art of War by Sun Tzu, its about a famous Chinese commander General who existed many century's ago who was of the greatest Generals of all time. Infact some modern day Chinese generals still use his teachings. You can even apply his teaching to every day dilemmas

Ulysses by James Joyce.

You'll get a literary boner before the first chapter is read.

If you want an easy reading intro to philosophy you should read Sophie's World.

Ulysses is widely regarded as one of the most unreadable books of all time.

I'd say Ulysses was very readable/enjoyable.

Dunno if it's been suggested yet but Ishmael(Daniel Quinn) is one of my favorites, when I first read it I found it very thought provoking, had never even thought about humanity in that light before and I can definitely say it changed how I see things permanently.

Siddartha, what a great book!

I read Siddartha and Candide at the same time and they reflected similarly upon each other.

I would like to add 'A Country Doctor' by Sarah Orne Jewett

'Mainstreet' by Sinclair Lewis

'The House of Mirth' by Edith Warthon
