Gymnopilus luteofolius on Pine?
    #18907461 - 09/29/13 02:58 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've never heard of this species growing on pine, they look identical to luteofolius so that is what I assume that what they are.

I left all the little ones to grow besides one. I pulled up a small piece of bark and there were tons of them so hopefully in the next few weeks I can get more. Has anyone else ever seen them on pine? Or even heard of it? I thought they were only on fir.

PMOTW says David Arora found them on wood chips of eucalyptus & pine. Primarily conifer wood, less commonly cottonwoods & other hardwoods. Also has been found on alder and apparently can easily be cultivated on hardwood logs & wood chips. So says Stamets, anyway.

I got to check on my G. luteofolius spot soon! I keep showing up too late in October.

I think the ones that Joust posts all come from a coniferous log. Probably not a true pine though.

Probably doug fir.

both G. luteofolius and G. aeruginosus can grow on coniferous or deciduous wood.
the wood type that these different species prefer is based on location.
with that being said, G. luteofolius is much more rare on hardwoods regardless of location.

the collection in this thread is most likely G. aeruginosus.

Wow, really?
That's cool, what separates the two microscopically?

Hesler couldn't find any microscopic differences between the two species.
However, Alan was just speaking with Laura Guzman and apparently she has.
I haven't spoken with her yet.
I actually planned on emailing her tonight.
Alan told me that she is interested in doing molecular analysis on my collections...
which is super exciting!! :super:

i'll keep everyone informed.
