wild mushroom prices?
    #18910784 - 09/30/13 11:02 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I know some of you sell your finds and I was wondering what the prices are these days? I am getting pretty poor and I need to atleast cover gas to be out hunting all the time.

Whats average per pound in your area for chants , cauliflowers, lions manes and even Agaricus campestris ?

Thanks peeps.

Chants are low low. You might be able to sell them for about $4 per lbs

Or about $8 canook dollars per kilo.

I would start hitting the pavement and phonebooks.

That is what I do.

Start high and move ever so slowly down if you need to.

If someone is growing them near you, you probably wont get that good
of a price.

When I have mushrooms that are extra, meaning my clients can't absorb what I have, I call as many people as possible.

Seriously, as soon as I get reception out of them hills I am on the phone
bugging all who might want them.

The ones with the adorable red bucket that you use to gather?

They are beautiful.  I have still not found any. Surprising with all the
places I have been in the PNW.

Cold call restaurants. Ask for the chef and tell em what you got.

So I am new to the area and still getting our venture going. I see a couple mushroom buyers in town and decide to make some extra change. I stop and inquire about prices for 1's and 2's all species(no retail contacts yet....just moved here). I am told by ALL buyers here that all they will buy are chanti's AND they only pay 1.00-1.50/lb! WHAT?! (have my suspicions all are same guy different booths) FUCK THAT! Go pick your own damn mushies bitch! Seriously! Ive been out of this awhile and had no idea things had gotten so bad on pickers. Its a shame.

Seems to be a bumper year for chants...  I stopped at a buyer south of town here on my way by last week, he told me he was giving $14/lb for #1 ceps...  And $5 for chants, but I don't think they're as plentiful further south as opposed to further north.

Might be true.  I know it's hardly worth it for matsis, the bottom is entirely out of that market, it seems.

Cartel collusion?  We call it the mushroom mafia.  LOL

And yeh, the same folks run multiple stations...

I see it as the continued devaluation of manual labor in favor of white collar professions in america. I may go out and hunt for myself and family because I love doing it, however, if I sell to someone, I expect better than min. wage for my extensive knowledge and my walked 30 miles with a 5 gal bucket.

Is that really the consensus? I know my chanterelle spot is popping more than the previous 3 years.  Just wondering from those who have been picking regular spots for more than 5 years what the season is looking like to you.

Unfortunately I have only been hunting once this year. I hope it turns out to be the best season even if I have to miss most of it.

I hate when I get mushroom fever and I'm busy with work.

I'm judging bumper year from what I've heard here, seem to be jumpin' up north.  And they're beautiful, the ones I find here always seem to be in dark nooks and crannies and filthy with duff.

You could walk into local restaurants with a haul. First time, give out small samples, just to develop a link and get a conversation. Some restaurants won't be comfortable sourcing like that, and you can't really blame them. In the course of that you should be able to establish what they are generally paying for what, those that know their mushrooms. Make sure that chefs are informed of any qualities of the mushroom that would help them cook it, and not to serve it raw.

When you have mushrooms that won't keep, be sure to sell them first. If you have some over that will dry well you can do that and put it in a nice jar, or create a preserve (a local chef made me a preserve last week to demonstrate. I concluded Macrolepiota procera isn't at its best that way).

Ideally you already have a haul by 11am so that you can contact or visit buyers in good time. Later in the day is tricky, they are not as likely to put it on the menu.

In general imo it would be better practise in time to cultivate local species to popularise them, partly because if commercially foraged mushrooms catch on you encourage others whose standards in several areas may not be as high. Then again I am a bit protective of the countryside here. Anyway for now I would say it's honest income and quite exciting for you! Good luck!

Thats the plan here. We are starting our grow with blue oysters and hericium, probably next month(still trying to get moving costs covered). Only stopped at the buyers to see if there was a possibility of some quick change to help out as I have found MANY good edible areas here. Last time I picked for a living I made 6/lb on chanti's alone not to mention the higher prices for less well known edibles from local buyers. Just was shocked at the price drop over the years. Or maybe its a washington thing, who knows.

Oysters arent worth squat and are a dime a dozen. And for real, the shelf life isnt good. unless you only harvest young clumps. the big ones just split and no one buys them then.

I know a person like that too but they are waaay in the city , so that it isnt worth my time to sell to them. Would be nice to just unload everything at once.

I talked to a local market and they said they are interested but they dont know about the rules of selling wild mushrooms. And what steps must be taken to keep their business safe.
