Thai KS finally pinning on BRF cakes, Creepers to follow soon...(growlog?!?)
    #18910712 - 09/30/13 10:37 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I've got pins!!!! Finally!!! lol

9/27: First sign of pins on 2 cakes, this was 11 days in the FC chamber

they started to grow from under the cakes, but when I seen the pins, I flipped the cakes over so the pins would be on top, took pics, then I read what RR said about the pins on the bottom need to stay on the bottom and flipped them back over!!

9/28: Pins on first 2 got larger, and 3 more cakes start to show pins!

9/29: Pins even LARGER!! now 8 of 11 cakes are pinning strong!

I flipped over one cake to see how it effects the pins, as they look like they were getting squished under the cake.

9/30: Same pins, and shots of some of the new pins.

10/1: Pins that aborted so i only got 10g wet from it... should of left it upside down, lol, other one i left alone is still going strong!

All I can say so far is damn these KS are FAT!!!

More updates as they come...

Yea, If they're pinning from the bottom leave them like that. They think that's where the best conditions are. If you flip them they probably will abort since if the top of the cake was ideal in your set up they would pin there.

That's what I read from RR but I had to try it my self on one cake.  Hasn't aborted yet, but I will see, if that one cake of 11 aborts, I guess I just get to test them earlier, lol.

quick question, here is shot of my fruiting chamber, the lid is white, not transparent, is the light ok sitting like this just shinning through the SGFC holes or would I be ok to cut a large hole in the top that the light will cover on top and seal?

I would just position the light so it's on the side of the tub.

I wouldn't put the light on the side of the tub, the shrooms tend to grow toward it and you won't get pins on top.

I would put it on top as a matter of convention and best practice but it's just not true that they wouldn't pin on top. They grow away from gravity and will pin on the top if the conditions are met for pinning.

would it be ok to cut a 4in hole in the top if the lit covered the entire hole and I sealed it down, or would that mess up the airflow of the SGFC too much

Just get a clear tub in the future and leave the light on the side is what I would do. I wouldn't mess with the SGFC and the light on the side isn't going to make it fail by any means. The mushrooms do get energy from the light and orient the caps towards the light but the stems still grow straight up. The most you might see is some caps that are slightly tilted, big deal, just make another SGFC down the road.

I guess flipping the cake over did cause them to stall/abort.  The veil broke on the larger of the ones in the picture, but it is still not as large as the one I left alone, which is still growing and not broken it's veil.  The other small one, from the same cake, veil didn't break, but it looked as if it was aborting.  I have lots of new pins, but they are not growing as fast as these did.  I am hoping they grow larger with me not moving them/flipping them.

So if the wet-dry ratio is 10-1, then I can't wait for the rest of the fruits.  If this was a 1 dry gram equivalent, I can't wait for 3 or 4g's.

With fruits this size, should I cut them in half before placing them in a dehydrator, or will they dry as the little fat ones they are?

They should dry just fine without cutting them in half, just let them sit in the dehydrator a little longer if you notice they aren't drying like they should. Those things look so weird... Either way, congrats!

I will get pics of the new fruits either later today or tomorrow before they go into the dehydrator.  I let one grow past breaking the veil, and the cap got all wavy and cracked in the top middle, but still a stem thick enough for smurfs to live in, lol.  I am getting slightly fuzzy stems so I know I have a high RH, but I would rather have high then low.

the problems are just a mess of spores but not a huge issue{the veil braking}
but the loss of potency is the main issue, and if your dehydrating them any way then your not getting any more dry weight regardless and the fuzzy stems is more of a sign of fae , just keep up your fan and mist ad you'll be fine, the rh that matters is the visible moisture on the surface, that gives you 99 percent where it matters most:thumbup:
