Growbox as a gift. Which kind (of gourmet shrooms) recommended for easy maintenance?

So, I had this weird idea of giving my old father a monotub of edibles he can maintain himself, that will produce fruits he can cook with.
I just know he'd love some (to him) strange gourmet shrooms for his casseroles and stews.
However, I'm only experienced in growing cubes so I have no idea which kind of shroom to grow. I'm not that fond of shrooms either, so I'd love suggestions regarding taste and easiness of the shroom chosen.
He lives 500 miles away, so I can't be there to maintain it. That calls for simple maintenance like mist or fan maybe 1x a day. He's sorta strung out and forgets stuff.
I thought I'd do the preparations at home, and bring it to him for christmas.
So, reishi? oysters? shiitake? All suggestions welcome

After a little bit of research, I'm aimed at Oysters for their ease of growing. Everyone seems to rate them as the easiest to grow. They look to grow on the most substrates of any of the mushrooms.
As for taste and aroma, some people have described them as Fishy, pink being the fishiest (I'm going to try Pearl). Some sites say that they take on the flavour of what they're cooked with.
If your dad is anything like mine, I imagine he'll do best with the Oysters.
Of course, I don't have any experience with any of the edibles either, yet! But I've got it almost entirely planned out.
Good Luck! Hope your dad loves it!

I have grown pink oysters. I've also talked with folks who have seen the results of amateurs growing oysters from a grow kit. The results can be fairly poor - it is not that easy to keep oysters happy as it may seem. That said I think either oyster or shiitake would be similar in difficulty. Reishi is a bit trickier yet. Keep in mind shiitake mycelium 'browns over' and can look nasty to the amateur. Growing oyster may be more pleasing to the eye. Have fun with edibles - my family loved eating the oysters

I would actually suggest enoki, if low maintenance is required. They grow just as prolific as oysters but dont need the FAE like oysters do (though they may need slightly cooler temps). I just harvested close to 1 and 1/4 pound from 1 enoki sawdust block. IF you are not worried about yields (which can be lower until some experience is gained) also look into pioppinos. FAE wont be a problem for them either. It is hard to get oysters to have enough FAE with a monotub. Also their spore-load can be a health issue as well. Best of luck.

Very true about the oysters, unless the recipient happens to live in a semi-humid climate.
People have problems fruiting oysters when they stuff 'em in a greenhouse and don't give them enough air. I live in Maine and just fruited a small bucket right on the kitchen counter. Didn't even remember to mist them but once. They did just fine.
But yeah, oysters in a monotub? No way.
Go with those pioppinos.

Aleon would enoki be able to grow invitro in a myco bag ? it would make for a very simple and carefree gift.

I have never fruited enokitake invitro, generally when it start to pin in the bag it pins on the sides not the top. I am working on learning to grow them from the top of the bags with tall sidewalls, but for now i have been stripping the bag off and fruiting form all sides. Been getting great yields of nice clusters. If you want to fruit invitro i suggest piopinno as stated before, or for a tea mushroom, reishi antler form. Here are some of the pics of an enoki block i harvested a couple of days ago. Close to 1.25lb off of it:

Hrm, thank you very much for this! I'll take that into consideration. My environment is really quite arid, but I'll definitely be more aggressive with the FAE than I would have been otherwise.

If youre looking for a good low maintenance mushroom, reishi is definetly the one.
Aleon i will try to grow the enoki invitro in my homemade terrarium and in a xl myco bag and post the results if i succeed

they grew really nice and tall well not as tall as i would have wanted but they were ok.
But i guess you want to give a mushroom thats more for cooking.Still the reishi makes for a really nice mushroom to watch as it is other worldly looking.

Hi, your album is pretty awesome Aleon! Thanks for sharing (and by the way, do you always fruit your piopino sideway like that?)
Also, I give myself a +1 for the Pioppinos! (edit: +1 for pioppino in monotubs)

I mean, (i'm not sure if I have the correct english words for that) your blocks seems to be "right-side" up. We clearly see that the bottom of the block is on the right instead of being under.
Is it a pinning trigger or it's just because you had invitro mushrooms?
Looks like you do it too with lion's mane. By the way the whole album is awesome! I'm curious about how you manage your FAE there, I will search some of your older treads
*Really sorry to have hijacked this tread!

I fruit many species on their side with X's cut into the bag. Oyster, Lions mane, pioppino, and Kings all will grow this way; provided the right strain is used and the timing is right. One reason for this is harvesting through X's is very quick/easy and requires no tools, just hands. Using this methos I have been able to increase yields for oyster and lions mane by %150-200 compared to "traditional" spacing(shiitake spacing).
FAE is managed with a couple of inline fans going into a plenum which has a small evaporative cooler. One fan comes from outside and one from the central air system in our house. This is then pushed through a lab grade HEPA filter and into the FC. When the FC is completely full the CO2 is around 1000PPM.

Great advices aleon, thanks a lot! I will try to read up on enoki the next couple of days!
Cooler temps is no problem, he lives in the woods in a rather cold cabin.

For the first time ever, I'm looking forward to giving a christmas gift, I never come up with good/decent gifts, but this will kick ass!
He's just been diagnosed with throat cancer and diabetes because he quit smoking after 50yrs, so this will even be good for his health. He still eats all kind of crap, with fatty acids and sugar, maybe this will give him a new looks on healthy foods.
