Species ID: Craterellis tubaeformis?
    #18908542 - 09/29/13 07:19 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

First foray into edible wild mushrooms so looking for any input from some more experienced foragers! If there are additional identifiers I should be looking for before giving these a shot in the kitchen, please let me know.

Habitat: Mixed conifer/hardwood forest with extensive lake and river system.  All specimens found in proximity to moist, densely mossy sections of the woods.

Gills: False, light grey/lavender. Spore print is cream coloured and even appears texturally creamy.

Stem: Light orange/yellow darkening to a more pronounced orange tone with maturity; dried stems are burnt orange. Hole in cap extends into hollow stem.

Cap: Yellowish beige in early development, round with edges curled under (like a jellyfish), darkening to brown tones with maturity and unfurling to concave with ruffled edges and hollow centre.

Bruising: Not that I have noticed.

General location: Laurentian region of Quebec. (I would love any other suggestions for what to look for out here!).

Looks like 'em to me. Wait for a TI to confirm before you ingest.

As always with new mushrooms start with a small amount before you go crazy on them. I have never eaten the yellow foot myself but have seen tons and they always smell real good.

Some of the coolest ones I have ever seen. I have never seen them with
such a strikingly purple underside/gill area, uh, I don't know what to call
that part of a mushroom with false gills and no distinct cap.

Any ideas on what that is called anyone?

TI?

Gathered some more today. Will definitely try just one before making any meals though.

Make sure the gills all look like this ones do.

There is a look alike that has true gills and grows in the same habitat.

You 100% have Craterellus.

I think you will love these mushrooms. One of my favorite eats.

Little mushroom with a strong and wonderful umame flavor.

TI stands for "trusted identifier." This label appears below the avatar of certain members who've given consistently good identifications. In general it's good to wait for TI before ingesting anything whose identification is not glaringly obvious to you, but the false gills really narrow things down in this case. So I second Ganzig's advice to go ahead and eat them (just be sure to check that the gills are false on all specimens).

You are lucky! I am going to a spot this year that I have not been for 3 seasons. We mainly go for hedgehogs but yellow foot are everywhere!

Enjoy your spot and be careful who you share your secret with. There are  evil mushroom coveters all over the place:eek:
