Spores: P. Cubensis (“P. Fanaticus Original”) Method: BRF cakes w/ dunk’n’roll and SGFC Start: Aug. 28th 2013
Introduction This project consists of nineteen 250ml cakes, and one 50ml shot glass cake, inoculated from three different home-made syringes with widely varied spore content which again were made from three different prints originating from our first cultivation run. This will be our second try at cultivating P. Cubensis after a mostly successful initial attempt.
Spore syringe #1: Made on Aug 25th 2013, 6ml, low-normal spore content Spore syringe #2: Made on Aug 28th 2013, 10ml, high spore content Spore syringe #3: Made on Aug 28th 2013, 10ml, excessively high spore content
The BRF-cakes were prepared to a standard 2:1:1 ratio with no additives, then steam-sterilized and inoculated over the course of three days. They were then designated a letter and number so that batches and individual jars can be differentiated.

Colonization The jars will be placed in the same room we used for colonization last time, which is usually left dark and unused. It has no particular temperature control, but it generally stays within the range of 20 - 25c this time of year.
Day 01 – 00:00 Batch B has been inoculated and the clock has been started.
Day 02 - 18:00 As of today batch AI and C has been inoculated and has joined B. All of the nineteen jars are now ready for colonizing. The jars are all looking good, and the BRF mix seems to have settled very well, giving the appearance of a light, fluffy and even substrate - unlike the last grow where many jars had compacted matter towards the bottom.
Day 04 - 03:00 Temperature is 22c. We have found the first traces of mycelium directly below the inoculation area of the shotglass cake (BS), but no development on any of the 19 larger cakes as of yet.
Day 05 - 05:00 The temperature is 25c. We are noticing a lot of growth in several jars.
AI 1-9: Severe growth on all four inoculation points.
B1: Early traces of mycelium at two of four inoculation sites. B2: Early traces of mycelium at one of four inoculation sites. B3: Early traces of mycelium at one of four inoculation sites. B4: Early traces of mycelium at all four inoculation sites. BS: Clear mycelium growth below the inoculation point.
C3: Early traces of mycelium at one of four inoculation sites. C5: Early traces of mycelium at two of four inoculation sites. C6: Severe growth at three of four inoculation sites, minor growth on the fourth.
 Pictured above: BS, Day 05.

C1: About 65% colonized. C2: Great development on 2 inoculation points, no development on 2. I suspect having inoculated the same two areas twice as one of the sites on the cake clearly has two separate areas of development - one above the other. C3: Great development on 2 inoculation points, good development on 1, no development on 1. C4: About 60% colonized. C5: More than 65% colonized. C6: More than 85% colonized.
Day 13 – 21:20 The temperature is 25c. There is no sign of contamination, and all cakes seem to be doing fine. The ones which had inoculation points showing no development are generally lagging behind the remainder.
AI1: 100% colonized as of Day 13. AI2: More than 95% colonized. AI3: 100% colonized as of Day 13. AI4: 100% colonized as of Day 13. AI5: About 95% colonized. AI6: About 95% colonized. AI7: More than 95% colonized. AI8: About 99% colonized.

Day 14 – 13:20 The temperature is 23c. Keeping a close eye on the jars these days to catch them as they hit 100%.
AI2: More than 95% colonized. Noticing a miniscule dark particle in one of the colonized areas which looks to be a granule from the substrate being pushed against the glass, but I am making a note of it for observation in any case. AI5: More than 95% colonized. AI6: More than 95% colonized. AI7: About 99% colonized. AI8: 100% colonized as of Day 14.
B1: More than 60% colonized. B2: More than 20% colonized. B3: About 35% colonized. B4: About 80% colonized. BS: About 70% colonized.

Day 16 - 19:25 The temperature is 23c. Jar B2 and B3, both of which had multiple injection sites without development, are still lagging far behind the rest.
B1: More than 75% colonized. B2: About 30% colonized. B3: More than 40% colonized. B4: More than 95% colonized. BS: 100% colonized as of Day 16.
C2: More than 75% colonized. C3: About 80% colonized. C4: 100% colonized as of Day 16. C5: More than 95% colonized.
Day 18 - 22:00 The temperature is 24c. Planning to birth and dunk the first four cakes (AI1, AI3, AI4 and AI9) sometime during the next 24 hours.

Fruiting We are using a 65l shotgun fruiting chamber filled with ca. 10cm of moist perlite, as well as one smaller mini-SGFC which houses the single shotglass cake we made. For light we are using three LED bulbs in the 6500K range turned on and off in a loose day/night pattern and the room temperature typically stays between 20 and 25c. We will be misting and fanning as needed.
Day 26 – 16:30 All twenty cakes are now colonized and the SGFC has been filled with the twelve cakes that had completed a seven day consolidation period. We had to stack them pretty tight as we are currently too low on perlite to fill a second chamber. The humidity looks to be high and stable, and the cakes all seem to be thriving. The room temperature is ca. 23c.
Pictured above: Layout of the SGFC, Day 26.
Day 27 – 23:30 The humidity is high and stable. The room temperature is 23c. Some of the pins which appeared while still sharing the SGFC with an older batch have split down the stem. I guess this has to do with poor humidity, which there admittedly was towards the end.
SGFC#1 AI1: Birthed on Day 19. Heavy bottom pinning - to the point of almost tipping the cake. AI2: Birthed on Day 22 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development. AI3: Birthed on Day 19. Heavy bottom pinning as well as some side and top pinning. AI4: Birthed on Day 19. Heavy bottom pinning. Some of the larger pins have split stems. AI5: Birthed on Day 22 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development. AI6: Birthed on Day 22 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development. AI7: Birthed on Day 22 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development. AI8: Birthed on Day 21 w/ dunk & roll. Small pins are appearing all over the cake. AI9: Birthed on Day 19. Heavy bottom pinning. Some of the larger pins have split stems. C1: Birthed on Day 22 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development. C4: Birthed on Day 25 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development. C6: Birthed on Day 21 w/ dunk & roll. Small pins are appearing all over the cake.
M-SGFC BS: Birthed on Day 25 w/ dunk & roll. No significant development.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of the SGFC, Day 27.
 Pictured above: MSGFC, Day 27.
Day 28 – 09:30 Birthed C5 and put it to soak late last night. We are planning to donate it to a better home as we are low on space in the SGFC. I expect we will be fruiting the remaining six cakes in vitro, and hopefully we will have sourced some more perlite by the time the first flush is through.
20:00 The humidity in the main SGFC is high and stable and the room temperature is 23c. Cake C5 was rolled after its dunk and placed in a second mini SGFC, and has been picked up by its new owner. I had some fun and “planted” the shotglass cake (BS) in a tiny miniature flowerpot before putting it back in the mini SGFC. I don’t expect this to be beneficial to the yield in any form, but I am hoping it will make for a pretty picture when done. On the five jars we expect to fruit in vitro I exchanged the tinfoil with perforated clear plastic foil so I can see how it develops. As a means to get rid of an additional cake I crumbled B4 into two glass bowls and layered some vermiculite on top. Once again I doubt this to be really beneficial - and it still does not alleviate the need for more perlite - but as we have excess cakes I figure we might as well experiment a bit.
Pictured above: Layout of the SGFC, as well as our other halfassed solutions, Day 28.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of the SGFC, Day 28.
Pictured above: The little shotglass cake after it was planted, Day 28.
Day 29 – 21:30 The humidity in the main SGFC is high and stable and the room temperature is 22c. I seem to have been wrong regarding the pins I thought to be split. Either that or they have mended, because upon closer inspection it turned out to be merely discoloration.
SGFC AI1: All the initial pins have grown very quickly, and we expect to harvest it shortly. AI2: Small knots and pins all over. AI3: All the initial pins have grown very quickly, and we expect to harvest it shortly. AI4: All the initial pins have grown very quickly, and we expect to harvest it shortly. AI5: Small knots and pins all over. AI6: Small knots and pins all over. AI7: Small knots and pins all over. AI8: Healthy pins emerging from all over the cake. Significantly less clustering than on the un-rolled cakes. AI9: All the initial pins have grown very quickly, and we expect to harvest it shortly. C1: Some minor knotting, but little development otherwise. C4: No significant development, but as this is the newest cake I expect it to lag a bit behind. C6: Healthy pins emerging from all over the cake. Significantly less clustering than on the un-rolled cakes.
MINI SGFC BS: Sitting in its new tiny flower-pot inside the mini SGFC. Seems to be doing fine.
ADDITIONAL B1: Currently in vitro. Fully colonized as of Day 23. Mycelium is fighting through the vermiculite barrier. B2: Currently in vitro. Fully colonized as of Day 26. No visible development. B3: Currently in vitro. Fully colonized as of Day 25. No visible development. C2: Currently in vitro. Fully colonized as of Day 22. No visible development. C3: Currently in vitro. Fully colonized as of Day 22. No visible development. B4a: Crumbled. Cake fully colonized as of Day 18. Crumbled on Day 28. B4b: Crumbled. Cake fully colonized as of Day 18. Crumbled on Day 28. C5: Birthed on Day 28 w/ dunk & roll. Has been donated to a better home, and as such will no longer be included in the log.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of the SGFC, Day 29.
Day 30 – 22:30 I harvested the first fruits from cakes AI1, AI3, AI4 and AI9 which amounted to 22, 33, 45 and 47 wet grams respectively. Most of the fruits were small or medium sized in all respects with solid meaty stems. AI4 and AI9 are now practically naked, and probably ready for a dunk, but I will give them a day in the SGFC first to see if any of the many remaining pins develop. The other two cakes still have developing fruit.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of the SGFC, Day 30.
Day 31 – 16:30 We just harvested the remaining fruit from AI1 and AI3 for new total of 30 and 37 wet grams. The first fruits from AI8 (12 wet) and C6 (16 wet) were also picked. Cake C1 had to be turned ever so slightly as it was pushing a pin in underneath an adjacent cake.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of the SGFC, Day 31.
21:00 At last we managed to get a hold of some more perlite (hallelujah) and we could finally birth the remaining jars. We decided to keep cake B1 in vitro, as an experiment, seeing how it has already developed some minute pins inside the jar.
23:30 The humidity in the chambers is high and stable, and the room temperature is 21c.
SGFC #1 AI1: Currently dunking. AI2: Pinning very well from several clusters. AI3: Currently dunking. AI4: Currently dunking. AI5: Pinning very well from several clusters. AI6: Pinning very well from several clusters. AI7: Pinning very well from several clusters. Some of the small pins have a “cleft lip” kind of deformity on their caps, and one has what appears to be another pin growing from its cap. AI8: Have had some of its fruits picked but still has plenty of small maturing fruits. AI9: Currently dunking. C1: Pinning very well from several clusters. C4: No significant development except some minor knotting. C6: Have had some of its fruits picked but still has plenty of small maturing fruits.
SGFC #2 B2: Birthed on Day 31 and currently soaking up water. B3: See B2. C2: See B2. C3: See B2. B4a: Mycelium is fighting through the vermiculite. Can’t say I really know what to look for with these. B4b: See B4a. BS: Is now sitting in the larger SGFC, still in its little pot. It looks healthy enough.
ADDITIONAL B1: Two small pins are pushing against the glass.
Day 32 – 23:30 At last all the cakes are in their respective SGFC, with the exception of the one we are purposely keeping in vitro. The humidity is currently rising after recent misting and fanning, and the room temperature is 22c.
SGFC #1 AI1: Literally minutes out of the water. Looks like shit. The cake felt a bit looser in consistency than I expected, so maybe it would have benefited from a slightly shorter bath. AI2: Its pins are seemingly exploding, and I expect many of them to reach maturity relatively shortly. AI3: See AI1. AI4: See AI1. AI5: See AI2. AI6: See AI2. AI7: See AI2. AI8: The cake still has a few remaining small fruits growing happily, as well as a multitude of pins which show no intentions of developing at the moment. AI9: See AI1. C1: See AI2. C4: Finally developing some small but healthy pins, but there is little clustering to be seen in comparison to the other cakes. C6: See AI8.
SGFC #2 B2: Minutes out of the water, rolled in vermiculite and ready for action. B3: See B2. C2: See B2. C3: See B2. B4a: Smells and looks healthy enough, but I still have no clue if anything good is happening beneath the verm. B4b: See B4a. BS: Mycelium is taking over the vermiculite the cake was rolled in, but otherwise little apparent development.
ADDITIONAL B1: Several additional pins can be seen in the general area of the first ones, as well as sporadically around the remaining surface area.
Pictured above: Layout of the chambers, Day 32.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #1, Day 32.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #2, Day 32.
Pictured above: Closeup of jar B1, Day 32.
Day 33 – 23:30 I came home late to find several fruits ready for harvest on multiple cakes. The shotglass cake, BS, is also finally pinning. Due to the recent low room temperatures I am currently storing Jar B1 inside one of the SGFC.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #1 before harvest, Day 33.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #2, Day 33.
Day 34 – 20:30 Jars AI5 to AI8 and C6 have had their first flush completely harvested and are currently soaking up water. BS is coming along nicely in its pot, and B1 is doing great in vitro.
Pictured above: Closeup of cake BS, Day 34.
Day 35 – 13:00 The dunked cakes have rejoined the remainder in the SGFC. The room temperature is 24c and the humidity in the chambers is relatively high and stable.
Day 36 – 05:00 The room temperature is 22c and the humidity in the chambers is high and stable. Of the cakes in SGFC#1 only C4 still remains on its first flush at this point.
SGFC #1 AI1: Starting to show an occasional knot and miniscule pin here and there. AI2: Decided to neglect dunking, curious to see if and how it performs without. AI3: See AI1. AI4: See AI1. AI5: Looks like shit after the recent dunk - preparing for a second flush. AI6: See AI5. AI7: See AI5. AI8: Looks like shit after the recent dunk. I left a fair amount of pins and mushroom matter on the cake when preparing it for its soak and I am curious to see if they abort or not. AI9: See AI1. C1: Currently having a twelve to twenty hour bath. C4: Will probably be ready to harvest the following few days. C6: Looking marginally better than the other recently soaked cakes.
SGFC #2 B2: Heavy knotting all around. B3: Heavy knotting and a few healthy pins growing on the backside. C2: See B2. C3: See B3 B4a: Hell if I know. Seems to be alive and healthy, but that’s about the extent of what I can determine. B4b: See B4a. BS: Several healthy little chubby pins growing from the edged of the cake. B1: A whole lot of growth going on inside the jar. The two larger fruits ones are probably soon nearing maturity.

Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #2, Day 36.
Pictured above: Closeup of cake BS, Day 36.
Pictured above: Closeup of jar B1, Day 36.
Day 37 – 16:00 The humidity is high and stable and the cakes seem to be doing fine, with many of them producing fat and healthy pins. The last fruits from C4 and the first fruits from BS are ready to harvest.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #1, Day 37.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #2, Day 37.
Pictured above: Closeup of cake BS, Day 37.
Pictured above: Closeup of jar B1, Day 37.
22:00 Birthed and harvested B1, and put it to soak up water for a while. The fruits had small caps and long dense stalks, and surprisingly look not at all unpleasant.
Day 38 – 12:00 Humidity is high and stable and the room temperature is 21c. I have had to make slight rearrangements to SGFC #2 after birthing cake B1. All cakes in SGFC #1 are now on their second flush.
SGFC #1 AI1: Several juicy fat pins growing spread around the cake. AI2: Extremely dry and blue after having forgone dunking, yet producing a set of thin but seemingly healthy pins. AI3: See AI1. AI4: See AI1. AI5: Progressing beautifully, with multiple clusters of several medium sized pins around the cake. AI6: See AI5. AI7: See AI5. AI8: Similar to AI5, but slightly further along the progress and with almost all growth located to the top of the cake. AI9: Similar to AI1, but has even fatter pins – some as thick as my thumb. C1: Clusters of smaller pins are appearing on the sides and top of the cake. C4: Just out of the water, looks like five flavors of hell. C6: Looks very good, and has just started pinning ever so slightly.
SGFC #2 B1: Just birthed and out of the water. I left some of the smaller pins on the cake from its time in vitro. B2: A few small healthy pins have appeared here and there. B3: Some nice fat pins are growing on the cake. B4a: Actually seeing some minute pins and knots here and there. I remain hopeful. B4b: See B4a. BS: Still has in excess of half a dozen smaller fruits which will soon reach maturity. C2: Some knotting, but few signs of actual pins as of yet. C3: A lot of nice fat pins are growing on the cake.
Pictured above: Layout of the fruiting chambers, Day 38.
Pictured above: Closeup of cake BS, Day 38.
Day 39 – 05:00 Things are progressing great in the chambers, with the B4 bowls pinning all over and the largest fruit on AI9 is getting gigantic.

Pictured above: Closeup of cake AI9 with its huge horizontal fruit, Day 39.
Pictured above: Closeup of B4b, Day 39.
23:00 The humidity is high and the room temperature is 22c. I harvested a few mature fruits from the chamber, including the fat bastard on AI9, and put them to print in the SAB.

Day 40 - 08:00 Put AI2, AI4, AI8, AI9 and BS to dunk after harvesting their fruits. Forgoing the dunk on AI2 led to some pretty pitiful results.
Pictured above: SGFC #2, Day 40.
Day 41 – 23:00 We are having had to harvest continuously from multiple cakes throughout the last day, with most of the fruits being heavy and meaty. B4b is progressing marvelously, producing small but plentiful fruits. It will probably soon be ready for its first harvest.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #1, Day 41.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #2, Day 41.
Pictured above: Closeup of B4b, Day 41.
Day 42 – 06:00 Harvested the remaining small fruit from AI1, AI3, AI5 and AI6 and put them to dunk. I also harvested all the fruits from B4b before discarding the remains. I initially intended to attempt for further flushes, but given the state of the substrate after the first one I decided against it.
15:00 Harvested C1, C6 and B2 and then put them to soak up water
Day 43 – 12:00 I woke up to find B4a’s fruits open and just beginning to drop their load. The humidity is currentl low due to recent harvesting and reintroduction of dunked cakes but has generally been stable. The room temperature is 21c. I figure it is about time for a proper status update.
SGFC #1 AI1: Has been through two flushes. It is currently naked after a recent dunk. AI2: After a first flush it was left without re-dunking for a while with the only result being some truly tiny fruits. It is currently naked after a recent dunk. AI3: See AI1. AI4: See AI1. AI5: See AI1. AI6: See AI1. AI7: Currently dunking after its second flush. AI8: See AI1. AI9: See AI1. C1: Just through soaking, hopefully preparing for a third flush. C4: Has been through one prior flush and is currently sporting a decent maturing pinset. C6: See C1.
SGFC #2 B1: After a small initial flush in vitro the cake was dunked and is currently sporting some large, beautiful pins. B2: Just through soaking, hopefully preparing for a second flush. B3: Has a pretty pitiful maturing first flush pinset consisting of multiple very small fruits. B4a: Harvested its first and only flush and discarded the cake as of day 43. B4b: Harvested its first and only flush and discarded the cake as of day 42. BS: Has had a successful first flush and is currently naked in its little pot awaiting its second. C2: Currently dunking after its first flush. C3: Has had most of its first flush harvested and will soon be rinsed and put to soak up water.
Day 47 – 19:00 I have been unable to keep the log updated the previous days. Since being reintroduced to the SGFC most of the cakes have started to produce new pins and fruits. We are likely discarding most of the cakes after this flush has been completed.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #1, Day 47.
Pictured above: Overhead shot of SGFC #2, Day 47.
Day 48 – 12:00 Harvested some mature fruits from AI3 and AI4, both of which are now more or less naked. They will be discarded briefly.
Day 49 – 18:00 Harvested another few cakes. Twelve remain, all either almost at the point of harvest or just pinning ever so slightly.
Day 50 – 12:00 As I am currently unable to maintain the log properly - and seeing as the cakes are all nearing the end of their third flush - I am ending the log. Some select cakes may be kept for an attempted fourth flush and should anything interesting happen I will supplement the log as needed, but I will not attempt regular updates beyond this point.

Unfortunately, it can't be a real science without isolates . But yes, it is quite thorough.

Thanks guys =) Getting really small fruits from the cakes this time around. Plenty of them though, so I'm not complaining. No idea what the hell will happen with the cake I crumbled though...

Cognitive dissonance, what? Naw, seriously though, I'm all for getting in low blows at some morons expense, but a dumb question isn't always indicative of a dumb person... So I think I, we, owe people to attempt an objective answer first... and then we can rip them a new asshole if their mouth turns out to be larger than their IQ.
