Strange mushroom growing in potting soil
    #18908209 - 09/29/13 06:13 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hi I have 4 jars currently colonizing. After they colonize I was going to use them as the base of a layer casing, and use some potting soil on top after I pasteurize it.

The thing is that I used a week ago a part of that potting soil to plant some seeds, I left for a couple days and when I came back I found a mushroom in the pot, and on top of that it looks like it already dropped its spores.

Is this going to contaminate my room for my mushroom cultivation?

Should I use this potting soil for my layer casing or should I use something else?

Here is a pic

That is an old coprinoid sp of some sort.

If you sterilize your soil first you should be fine to use it still.

Not sure where the spores may have gone to, but I would keep an eye out for contamination and hope for the best.

This should be posted in the cultivation forum not the hunting and ID forum, please post cultivation questions there from now on.

This was a natural progression from an ID request. There is no problem with what
they are talking about.

On that note.

Why would you sterilize the soil? What harm does the coprinoid cause?

Sterilizing the soil is just a precaution to prevent other possible contaminates from jeopardizing the spawn jars... weather for a base layer or casing layer, it never hurts to make sure everything you introduce to your spawn is absolutely clean of other fungi and their pests.

also, Coprinus showing up is indicative that the soil might have other things going on in it...
so it may be best to err on the side of caution and clean the soil first.
