Prayer * 1
    #18907731 - 09/29/13 04:13 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

For when you absolutely don't want to get off your lazy ass and do anything and yet pretend you are making some sort of worthwhile contribution.

*solemnly bows head*

"Let us pray for all the starving children. Amen."

I have found praying is something I do when things are out of my control.
There is nothing I can do to help my cousin who is in the ICU right now, there is a team of professionals with skills I do not possess doing what I pray is their best with their knowledge and technology to help him. A silent mantra of hope echoing around in my skull, if not some appeal to a higher force, at the very least serves as a tool to maintain as much emotional equanimity as possible in trying times, a mindfulness tool.

It really isn't as if I could just march in there and save his life... And to expect anyone to have the expertise and power to influence and control any situation they may find themselves hopeless to help in is pretty absurd.  :beatadeadhorse:

This is it, to garner hope, even if sometimes in
The face of the inevitable. We pray for the duration
Of our lives. Just to make the passing time between
The stimulus of worry/fear/anxiety and the point at
Which the focus of the worry comes to pass.

Prayer, lol.  If you were choking to death would you want me to pray for your or give you the Heimlich maneuver.  I understand that most people who believe in the power of prayer do not use it in this manner, I am only demonstrating my point through humor.  Believing in prayer is dangerous in most instances as it affords people an excuse for inaction, much like OP said.  The power of prayer exists only because in certain instances inaction can be more beneficial than direct action, as well as the fact that if you are praying that you will find some strength than the psychological impact of believing you are being imparted with power may be enough for you to muster it up from the inside.

Prayer is generally extremely selfish anyways.  In the amount of time that it takes to speak roughly one sentence a child somewhere in the worlds dies under agonizing circumstances.  To believe that there is some omnipotent ever present diety that helps your prayers to find your mom a better chiropractor or for Him to cure you of your exzema whom admittedly isn't there in the lives of those suffering with real problems is both naive and narcissistic.

I simply use prayer to set certain intentions.. I feel if I sit down for a few minutes and focus on what I want to think about and what my everyday goals are, it becomes really easy to make a change in myself.

I pray that I am compassionate, healthy, happy, etc - then I just remind myself once in a while what intentions I want and I move towards a state of being I prefer.

It isn't too far away.

When I pray, I think "I would like to be happy. I would like to be healthy"

A person who believes in god would say "God, please make me happy. God, please make me healthy"

The mistake the religious person makes is giving all their power away to god. When I pray, I simply set my intention and then I follow the steps towards making it a reality.

If prayer is what they want, let them have it.

I don't believe in prayer, but I was asked by a persistent christian recently if there was anything I wanted him to pray for for me. I said, "sure, [lists stuff to pray for]." And we bowed our heads and prayed.
Was I offended? No. It was a gesture of kindness and I was happy to receive it as his gift to me. even if I believe it will do absolutely nothing it still meant something.
If someone wants to give you their blessing, let them.

This.

Someone would be better off focusing their energy toward something more meaningful than prayer.

Donating a dollar to charity is going to help those starving children more than a hundred people talking to themselves.

Prayer is for themselves is it not? The believers that prayer will change is just a manifestation of their own delusion? But how can we know they are wrong? These believers... I've seen some signs that strongly point to their being a god... but I definitely don't claim to know which one god is... and what we are meant to do in life...

I think god can be taken in by the most atheistical of atheists... and the most agnostical of agnostics ... all thats required is a certain series of steps... that lead them to lose control over something they can't lose control of.

After all... there has got to be SOMEthing that created the universe. Something beyond our knowledge at the present time...

Not that it guarantees an afterlife... but it gives me something to strive to figure out. Or at least try. Believing there is nothing out there is how we get stuck in our current boundaries. Like there won't be some crazy invention in 100 years that would BLOW all of our minds. Will it be time travel? Will it be space travel? Will it finally be God?

The thought of the future KILLS me... I am dying to find out. Pun NOT intended :smirk:

Wrong about god... not about prayers not working.

And... it when it does work its called coincidence.. when it doesn't its called fuck god.

If there was a god why would he answer every prayer?

I hate that if you really want to see god... you will. I hate it. People have told me that all my life and I've spat on them... mocked them... but damnit... when you're in a shit hole... and you need to grab something to pull you up.... the shit works lol.

I wish it was tangible... I wish you could show examples... but you can't. Its a personal journey every time.

But hey... don't mock hope. Its what keeps the weak from giving up. And the weak of today are the strong of tomorrow.

If was in a dangerous survival situation, I would choose as a partner a man of action over a man or prayer and hope every single time.

I'd choose a man of action until the danger was gone... then I'd follow the fake religion that would eventually overpower your spartans with sheer numbers.
