Small Shiitake problem
    #18892560 - 09/26/13 03:37 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, shroomies
These blocks (pasteurized straw + sawdust) are 6 weeks in and decided to fruit them, because they had huge in vitro pins already decomposing.
So I opened and cut out the rotting ones, cold shock for 12h then put in fruiting conditions.

The problem I´m having is the fruit bodies are still very small and the caps are all opening already.
I have thought that maybe by just partially opening the bags maybe there would be less fruits but bigger ones!?
This has been an on-going problem for me with some exceptions.
My tub isn’t the ideal thing but I have tried misting more that made no difference. I have fanned more that made no difference, added more light, I have done both and still made no difference.
I am gathering better conditions, but at this moment things are going slow, if you catch my drift.

What kind of enviornment do you have the blocks in?  I've heard straw is faster with shiitake and you also don't want to keep them around for extra flushes as a side note.

maybe because they fruit so fast compared to sawdust blocks wich sit for months, there is still a lot of spawn (N) in the block, causing mutations/weird fruiting?

a block of shiitake will only produce so much,  so if you have a lot of mushroom then each mushroom will be small but if you have few mushroom or 1 then the mushroom will be bigger.  I think your block is developing nicely.  hope this help.  just sit back and watch them grow.

You seem to have alot of pins but they are also small.  Where did you get your culture and what's it labeled as?  I know with king oysters I can pick the slow, smaller pins and it gives me fewer large fruits.  Maybe next time if you see this happening you can do just that.

CT, like i said i do have exceptions and when that happens there are much fewer pins. The blocks that get to 12 week have much bigger end fewer fruits. This makes me think it´s most likely due to the fact it has only 6 weeks and hasn’t browed properly.

My problem I guess is how does one stop or prevent in vitro pinning before 12 weeks in.

I use normal sleeve poly bags tied on each side and poked with a needle a few times around.

Sorry about the way I write, it late here, the thing is as I’m writing sometimes the solution or possible solutions come to mind and that just makes me wander way am I searching for the obvious... FAE, could it be!?

Almost forgot, the strain i use is a commercial culture specially indicated for straw and with i wide temperature tolerance (year around strain).

I take it you don't supplement?  I have an experimental bag of lime soaked straw with shiitake spawn and will see how it goes.  I do know that with my shiitake and king oysters I was doing side by side .2 micron bags and 5 micron bags and the 5 micron bags pinned invitro every time.  So fae could definitely be the cause.

No supplements, only straw and wood shavings.
When i get that right i will start supplementing with small quantities.
Well time will tell, today i made 12 more and this time with fewer holes.

I was reading in the Mushroom Growers Handbook stickied above that RH for fruiting of Shiitake has to be below 95%, otherwise the mushrooms rot.

I don't remember what the ideal range was, but I did make a mental note that you could create an environment where it was too high.

These blocks are in +-85%RH

I can't say I have ever had my shiitakes rotting on the block in high humidity, True they do like fluctuations though.

This is correct.

Also, perhaps that is a small strain.  I have large and small strains depending on market.  Another factor could be light.  Shiitake needs pretty bright light to develop to full weight.

Shiitake prefers a fluctuating humidity.  Spray to bring it up to near 100%, and then let the air and blocks dry out until down to 50% to 60% before spraying again.  It also prefers warmer temps during the lights on period and cooler temps at 'night'.

I have had occasional bigger fruits in the past:

I must say that when I started with blocks it seemed match easer then what it really is.
I have realized that my main problem now is pre-mature pinning in the gags at 4 to 5 weeks.

This block is 3 weeks old:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B__QmBtAWQnrdC1veHZuNlRDc2c/edit?usp=sharing (Updated link)

The block with the small fruits was premature I just birthed it when it started pinning to see the results.

All my bags just burst open when still white. I’ve been cutting of the pins and sealing closed with tape.
The reason I think this happens is due to fluctuating temperature around the blocks that triggers pinning and too many holes in the bags that lower CO2.  It hasn’t been easy to gather conditions. There are always temperature fluctuations especially now that winter is on the way 68° day and 53° at night.

Has anybody got ideas? Is this truly my problem or could there be other reasons?

I'm hoping to start a shiitake grow here shortly. I don't have a PC, so I plan on using BRF cakes as spawn, your set up is
