First grow, need help confirming contam
    #18907382 - 09/29/13 02:36 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

As the title says, I'm doing my first grow right now, using substrate prepared by Midwest Grow Kits, so I had no hand in their sterilization, only inoculation.
I already had to toss one jar to contamination, and two that just didn't grow anything at all. Now I have this jar, which seems to have some kind of sandy grey patches in multiple areas. Pretty sure it's a contamination, but I was hoping to get some help in IDing the probable source of the contamination, so that I can avoid it in the future.

Close up to better see grey area

Very close up, also yellowish spots to the left on this one?

Thanks guys

Wait a few more days.  What was your inoculation procedure like?

Looks like it could be mold... but like I said.  Wait a few more days to be sure unless someone else posts with a more confident answer.

Again, what was your inoculation procedure like?

Take the foil off, and I honestly don't see anything troubling. I have had cataract surgery so It might be my bad eye. How long have they been colonizing?

Go buy some of the short wide mouth jars, brf, and verm so you can make your own using the proper jars. Those tall jars are really bad about stalling on the bottom

Is it the depth of the jar itself, or the BRF compacting down?

Could one use what they have and just fill under half?

Wrong forum for contamination concerns.

Ps: WC3TFT.Shrooms, please stop posting the same reply to multiple threads. Not only is it generic and annoying but it's a really bad way to get your post count up.

With that being said, If it's not white it's not right.

I'm down with the aforementioned advice. RE: wait a few more days, try shorter jars next time.

Thanks for the replies guys. It looks like a lot of my other jars went downhill as well. Out of my original 12, only 2 still look healthy enough to proceed with. Will try to get shorter jars next time & I'm going to use cleaner inoc procedure
