Habitat: My neighbors backyard. Grass is cut, no trees in super close proximity. (closest tree is about 15 ft away)
State: Michigan
Gills: No gills.
Stem: Tiny stem. About 2 inches longer. Looks more like a root.
Cap: White mushroom like cap. No gills, big and round. Almost the size of a basketball.
Spore print color: No gills, no spores.
Bruising: No discernible bruising.
Other information: Smells Earthy like a button mushroom. My neighbor had stabbed it with a pitchfork because he didn't want to touch it. The interior of the stab area looks spongy and white.

Yeah I call those "puff balls" They turn brown and "puff" out brown spore clouds. I was told by some old timers that they are edible when they are white and solid still. Not much flavor however. I'm also from michigan so they have to be pretty much the same thing I'm thinking of.

It is as Tangich described. 'Giant Puffball'. Edible when white inside.

Awesome! Thanks for the input everyone If it is still white in the center, I may give it a try this week It looks pretty unmistakable to the puffball.

I tried the giant puffball I found. Wasnt bad. I would suggest sauteing some of it in butter to see how it tastes before cooking the rest in whatever you think would go good with it. I kindof wish I had battered mine and fried it in the deepfryer Tasted like funnel cakes kindof cooked in butter Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for that puffball report. Was it super fresh? Marshmallow texture inside? They kinda scare me.
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

YW always It was marshmallowie textured, white inside I can dig up pics if u want. It was an older one but still fresh. Im told the younger ones are better. I only found one younger one this year and couldnt find upon returning to take it. Deer prolly ate it. I was skeered too but if you try a small amount you should be fine. Just dont use me as an example. Like Im fine look at me! lmao Im not one to follow but this IM confident about because I had excellent educated people here on shroomery to help ID it within 95% due to no microscopy lol.

I'll probably start with the little Lycoperodons (sp?, too tired). Because I've never seen a giant. ;-)
