Howdy shroom aficionados! I've been lurking a while now and typically find the answers to my questions with a little digging around on the forums. However, I've got a question that I am unable to find an answer to and it goes something like this: Can I use steer manure purchased from home depot (or another big box store) as hpoo for bulk substrate?! It's like 2 bucks for 40 pounds and saves me a trip outta the city to collect fertile turds! I appreciate the feedback! -Oh and I should add that I would be processing it as though it were found hpoo...

Cow flop works decent.
There's lots of diff brands though, some better than others. When I use cow poo I like to add verm and even coir if I have it on hand, but definitely verm.
Also, I pasteurize in a pillowcase in case the cow poop gets 'runny. You don't have to, but I find it helps.
Good luck.

and I should suppose then if commercially available hpoo were to be sold at say hd, that'd be fine to use as well?! Is there another adequate substrate you can recommend for bulk growing or can you speak from experience to the effectiveness of coir/verm?! Thanks in advance!

Horse manure is great, but best gotten free. The store-bought will be expensive, but will probably work great.
There's hundreds of threads around here showing that Coir/verm/spawn makes good crops. Easy and clean.
You can also mix Coir with manure and add some verm... best of both worlds.

right on, sounds good. I have read that coir/verm takes longer to colonize than hpoo and therefore more prone to contamination. Blasphemy?!

Not true at all.
Coir is very contam resistant, and when properly pasteurized is actually very hard to get it to contam.
It is also slightly less nutritious than manure, meaning faster expected colonization times, not slower.

Personally about the bagged manure: I find even the same brands vary from region to region sometimes. Sometimes what you get is an over composted manure that is cut with sand.
I actually found big black trash sacks of h-poo at a nearby country hardware store, $3.00 for 50lbs lol.
