I have to say this is an awesome community! Really appreciate all the info out there and dedication from you experts. I'm 2 weeks into my first attempt, so thought I would start logging it in case I have any problems.......which I fully expect too. thank you all in advance and please tell me if I am doing anything ridiculously failure prone in my attempts.

Looking good so far, but do you see how the jars with the aluminum foil still covering them are growing much slower?

Agreed...pop the foil off those babies! They need the gas exchange. For me, the foil comes off first thing once they are removed from the PC

Thhanks, that makes sense, but I didn't make the connection. I was worried about contams since I had to stack the jars for three of them so left it on. I have since pulled two jars out and can probably get everything on the bottom level now. So everything I've read says the verm layer will protect things in the jar in this phase, but is it normal/OK to see myc growth up through the verm to the top when you open the jar, or would anything on that top level be considered contamination?

I've seen mycelium climb that high, yeah. You'll know if it's contamination when you see it. Normal mycelium is long, white and stringy, but contamination is usually round, blindingly white and bubbly.

Do you all mean that once you have done the pressure cook, you can remove the tin foil cap and place the jars into the incubator with no tin foil on top of jars?? Doesn't it make the cakes dry??

They wont lose moisture that fast. I have seen really old brf jars work just fine. The foil is to keep water out during sterilization.

This is what the dry verm layer is there for. Just try not to disturb it or tilt your jars around and it will do its job. It is the consensus of the community that the foil serves only to protect your jars from water being rained down upon it during sterilization.

Looks like they're right I'm track. Hopefully I show growth soon. Been 6 days. I think my jars are kinda cold. 65 ish degrees F. That incubator looks like it works good.

Wrapped up work on the discrete growing space walls and doors today. will post pics eventually but want to understand the lighting needs better. The space is totally enclosed and roughly 4' high by 3' wide and 18" deep. plan is to keep incubation chamber pictured above on bottom with shelving for separation. Then will have two larger mono tubs above that, stacked. There is an outlet in there and timer to run 12/12 lighting and continuous air turnover. Lighting best practice seems to be two lights, one one each side of my tubs lengths at the top of the space. So.........any suggestions on lighting fixtures, bulbs, brands, length (24"?) etc? What else should Be considered in lighting the enclosed space? Thank you all in advance.........

I realized later as I researched more that it doesn't need it, but it does in fact have it. It seems to be working so I haven't messed with it. It. Is a 15 gal aquarium with plexi cut to fit lid, 4" water in bottom with aquarium heater submerged.

Day 20: the kids are alright! Removing from incubator and placing in my finished grow space.
My log so far: inoculated 6 Jars each PB, GT, CAM, and B+ from syringes purchased online to jars purchased online.
Day 15: opened a jar of P and C to make sure my incubator wasn't contaminating things, and placed the fully developed sections in a mini mono of my own design (nothing so far there, expected it to fail). Removed foil from 3 GT jars wih forum advice.
Day 20: most jars are 80-90% colonized.
PB
GT
CAM
B+

i just recently started my first time grow (this is my first post). just a quick question bc im about 10 days behind your grow so i figure i will subscribe and follow your journal. i have tape covering the 4 holes on the metal lids. does this slow down the growth as well? like "sinysterkyd" had with the foil covering the lids?!
Thanks no highjack intended

My understanding is you want those holes open for air exchange, the verm layer will protect the interior sufficiently.

Correct. Most people put tape over the holes And Inoculate Right Through The Tape, Then Leave The holes open. I went ahead and made some jar lids With Self-Healing Inoculation Ports And polyfill Filters Just To Be Safe.

i wouldnt handle those wrong sized jars anyway because it can cause settling of the brf to compact at the bottom of the jar restricting GE to the myc to colonize the bottom of the jars.

These B+ are starting to look real freaky..............thick with small caps, some caps rupturing because stems are growing faster and the largest one is curling down under from the top edge of the cake. Some fuzziness around the base of the large ones. Anyone have any thoughts on if I should be adjusting something?

How often do you fan and mist? More cakes need more fresh air. Or they could just be mutants! Love a good mutant.

Usually 4x daily, but the longest span between mistings is while I'm at work so 10 - 12 hours during the week. Weekends I may get in 4-6 mists a day, and just a quick fan each time I mist.
I am thinking it could be stale air in the enclosed space as well, and already started correcting that. This is SFGC in an enclosed space and today I added a hydroponic style humidifier to pump air in from outside the space, so maybe that will help. Space is constant 72~73 degrees, humidity at 60% in there before I added the humidifier pump.

I don't have a good hygrometer in there, but the walls stay moist between mistings for the most part, unless I've been gone for a long period (12 hours) then they will start to dry out. Part of the challenge in loading the cakes so heavy is that you can't spray the perlite directly I guess?

Should be perfect if it was properly built.
But I see less than 3" of perlite so yea....

That is terrible, the walls that got wet from you misting should be dry in a couple hours tops, or your chamber is not getting enough FAE.
Quote:

What?
Spray everything directly with a fine mist...the cakes and the perlite.
Then fan out the chamber so some of that water can evaporate and induce pinning.

So if your jars are 50% colonized at the top of your jar and the mycelium is reaching through the dry vermiculite layer what would be my next step? Do I just leave it be and let it do its thing or is there something I can do?

Thanks guys. My perlite comment was poorly worded. The problem I was trying to say is that there is less perlite surface area to absorb mist with all the cakes in there, compared to when I ran the test run of the two small cakes that went very well for a noob like myself
I've got plenty of pinning even on the cake that is exploding right now more pins are popping at the base of fruits, so I think the exchange and humidity is good.
I will start paying more attention to the wall humidity then, I haven't really been mentally noting it every time I mist.
Perlite level is a little under 3", it was at 3 when I loaded it up afew weeks ago but seems to have compacted some.

If everything is colonized except for the dry verm layer, leave them for one full week longer and birth, dunk and roll.

Updated my SGFC with more perlite and started the second one last night, with trays now. My first two B+ cakes that finished first flush have a 2 day total of 99.5 g wet, I'm very pleased with that!
the new layout, split each SFGC with a tray and 5 - 6 cakes

one of the early first-flush cakes

60g harvested today
