Pear shaped puffball
    #18904887 - 09/28/13 10:31 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Greetings One of my favorite wild edibles is the Pear shaped puffball and i was wondering if anyone has grown (or tried to) them. I can't find much info online (Japanese patent about all when it comes to cultivation) but seeing how i always seem to find them fruiting in large groups and growing on well decomposed wood i figure it is worth a shot.
In the wild they always seem to be growing on very decomposed logs (so rotted that i have yet to id the types of logs they grow on in my area)so i am guessing they are not primary decomposers but grow best in wood that has already been partially consumed by other organisms first so i was thinking they might grow well on spent wood based substrates that have been re-sterilized after growing oysters or some other fungus.
Does anyone know if they have a preference for any specific type of wood and weather they need some micro organisms in the substrate to initiate pinning (like the Garden Giant). Any info tips or suggestions would be appreciated as i have some cloned cultures getting established on agar and am looking forward to experimenting.

Interesting. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I think it shouldn't be to hard since they grow fairly abundantly. I have been experimenting with a clone of a gem studded puffball or similar mushroom (perhaps lycoperdon marginatum). eager to see what kind of results you can get. I would definitely try on fairly well rotted wood (maybe dark woodchip mulch or similar substrate)

I very much so like Lycoperdon pyriforme.  Wish you the best of luck, keep the post updated with any trials you do or info you come across
