Boletus bicolor???
    #18904150 - 09/28/13 07:33 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

These were taken in November of '11 on the southern Oregon coast, doug fir scrub habitat...  I didn't take a spore print.  I don't recall any distinguishing scent.  The yellow pored boletes look unappetizing to me, so I wasn't paying much attention, but now I'm curious.  You can see the pore bruising on the first shot, not so much in the one I photographed.  Ignore those shaggies, and is that pretty one A. caesarea?

--------------------
"Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats."

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

if I recall correctly boletus bicolor is supposed to be redder near the base of the stipe gradually becoming yellow towards the cap. And also bruise blue. Also I  remember there being tons of close resemblers. Cap also doesn't look red enough although it could be the lighting.

Of course I ate the shaggies!

Kuo sez:

The tube layer is very shallow in comparison to most boletes.

And this mushroom has a fat tube layer...  Maybe:
rubellus (no, Mycorrhizal with hardwoods)
campestris (no, habitat in grassy, open places, in the east or texas)
fraternus

Oh, crap.  Where's BittrBuffalo?

doesn't quite look like A. caesarea either. Those would require a volva? Honestly I've got no idea what it is.

Volva present, just not huge and egglike, like some of the caesarea pics...  right?

In that case it looks like it to me. But I'd wait for a TI dude. I'm definitely not to be trusted in the matters of amanita. Nice finds in any case.

Yipyip.  I've been checking the spot that's fruited the last 3 yrs under my motorhome every day (that's probably where those came from).  This spring there was a sizeable flush on a mowed lot just a bit down the street.  Got to 'em a bit too late, probably could have taken 5-10 lbs if I'd been on it, on drivebys I always take a peek and wander down there about once a week.  When they pop here I'll check down there every day.

I just slice 'em ringlike and saute with a bit of butter and pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon and eat them solo or maybe with a little basmati.

And I'm still picking a young 'un or two a day of those A. augustus. It's a hard call with the bugs...  I'd like to get one up big enough to sporify real good, but we're getting dumped on now and they seem to be slow.  The moisture will either help 'em along or make 'em go away, but the temp came back up a little...  I'm hoping they just keep magically going...  And I'm gonna mulch that whole spot with grass clippings real good this winter.  Maybe I'll get real lucky and have some good spawn in clippings...

Nice. Good call on the basmati.

I was taught to egg batter them in breadcrumbs or panko and fry em.

That is pretty darn tasty too.

But, you could deep fry a cell phone and id probably eat it.

Oh, man, flashback!

One of the companies I worked for in silicon valley had a nice cafeteria and they served up something like that.  And sold a F^^^ton of them.

That was a painful remembrance.  Can't think of what they called the monstrosity, tho'.

One of my favorites too. I thought it would be amazing deep fried. Not so much.

Yeh, it was the deep fried sandwich thing that got to me.  But I'm a native west coaster.  Had I been birthed in Georgia I might have a different sensibility.

Does anyone have a name for that?  The folks in the cafe made it sound like this was a staple food in the whole nation.  I'd never heard of such a thing.
