Street Legal Dirt Bike

I have always been a 4 wheeler kind of guy, but I am thinking about making a change.
I would like to acquire a cheap and used street legal dirt bike. I want to use it mainly for riding around town and especially going to fire calls on.
Has anyone ever owned or used a street legal dirt bike?
How much is the insurance? Are they difficult to ride? What else can you tell me?
I never rode a motorcycle before. Just a bike..
I get studs on my car tires during the winter; my friend told me it's possible to get studs on your dirt bike tires so that you can ride with ease during the winter.
Eh?

I rode an endure for the last two summers. a KDX200. I rode it mostly on dirt with some highway riding in between trails. It could be registered for legal road use, but I never.
Enduro or dual sport is what you need, and normally they are relatively cheap on insurance.
My KDX200 was a two stroke, but 4 strokes are more simple as you don't have to premix gasoline. But four strokes are much heavier, more expensive to maintain, and four strokes are less powerful displacement being equal.
The WR400 is a nice bike, but KTM is best, and they make a lot of really nice dual sports and enduros. Lots of them where I live.
They aren't too hard to ride. Cornering will be completely different for you though coming from an atv.

People keep telling me about leaning into turns. If I don't lean will I crash? haha
I am guessing they teach you this stuff in the motorcycle license class though.

Pretty much, if you dont lean the bike will stay in a pretty straight line.
As well coming out of corners hitting the throttle helps stand the bike up due to gyroscopic forces, they play a big part in motorcycle handling.
Depending on where you live, there might be a dirt bike school that would be good to check out as well as a street bike course.
In one weekend they will have you hitting jumps and catwalking your bike.
Bikes are great fun, I sold mine last month but want another next spring.
What is your budget like? I'd for sure say go used way cheaper, and kijii always has year old used bikes for way under MSRP.

I am looking to buy a used bike for as much as 1,000. What do you think? Too cheap?
I don't know much about dirt bikes.
What makes a dirt bike street legal? I mean, if I buy some bike off of Craig's List how do I make it street legal?

I guess this one is not street legal. Since it has no mirrors and all.

For it to be street legal you will need mirrors, reflectors, headlight and brake light. Here anyways. emmisions and sound levels for some places too.
1000 is a bit cheap for a bike, especially one to be made street legal.
Many companies sell kits to make bikes street legal, but I'd just suggest getting one already street licensed. Here it is called a blue plate, vs a green plate needed to legally ride trails.
A 125 would probably be too small for you. Look for 200cc two stroke or 250cc 4 stroke minimum.
That bike though would have a short gear ratio and will have the high pitched brap brap of two strokes.
Also, KTM before 2004 arent very good, my brother in law has a KTM 200cc 2stroke, major issues with front fork seals leaking. The newer ones since KTM was bought out all use top notch parts.

Seems like an okay bike. A 200 4 stroke will be slow though.
Also, watch a few youtube videos on buying used dirt bikes. There is a lot of stuff to check for to make sure you dont end up riding a grenade.
Also, check kijiji, maybe it is different where you are, but here all the dirtbikes are listed mostly on kijiji.

Cool thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.
I will do some research!

PM if you need any help later on. I know a decent amount about different bikes.
Also, try to get a maintenance manual for your bike, will save you a ton in the long run.

I had a 09 Suzuki DR650. It was my first street legal bike, it was really easy to handle and ride. You should have no problem learning to ride on an enduro style bike. Insurance was really inexpensive, I didn't use full coverage though either. It was pretty good on gas, around 40 mpg. It was good bike for in town running around, ok on the trails, a little clumsy for being a little bit bigger of a trail bike, I would personally rather have a 250 or 400 if you plan on being more off road and trails. Definitely not very comfortable for long cruises though. When I bought the bike new in 09, it wasn't very expensive, around $5k. At the time I shopped around and Suzuki had the cheapest price compared to a Honda or Yamaha, so that's just what I went with. And you probably won't want to ride in the winter on ice or through snow....lol. If you do, plan on buying some warm riding gear.

I've been thinking of getting a dirt bike. I wouldn't have much opportunity to ride it off road so I was thinking of making it street legal, is this silly ?
I've been admiring the Kawasaki KLX140, though I don't know much about bikes so that might change.

Lol well some state u don't need to have turnsignals and u can licence a dirt bike for the road it's up to ur state laws Enduros are pretty much a street legal dirt bike I would never see the use for one myself because I love my Harleys and my fists in the air while I ride But to his his own I would recommend taking a local riding class/course around you to get ur licences I wouldn't get on a motorcycle and hop on the road immediately and don't try and get the fastest one you can first you work your way up from the bottom Good luck man hopefully u get a nice scooter
