Do you take multi-vitamins?
    #18903699 - 09/28/13 05:37 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Like the title states. I try to take them daily, a broad vitamin and mineral pill with extra B vitamins.

And sometimes, normally after drinking I supplement with B complex vitamin.

I've taken multis since I was young, and B vitamins once I found out how alcoholism affects B vitamins in the body.

So what do you guys take, how often, and why?
Do you take multi vitamins?
You may choose only one

I mean to take a multivitamin every day but I forget sometimes, so I put "occassionally" for the poll.

I take them before it apparently is healthy for you.

I'm currently doing an incomplete  supplementation routine. I currently take a "multi mineral" supplement which exceeds the cost of a typical multi-vitamin + mineral supplement. I also take Quali-C vitamin C.* I take more, but I don't feel like going into that right now. A type of fish oil (currently fermented cod liver oil) is also one of my staples, but I took a break for financial reasons.

*Vitamin C plays many extremely important roles within the human body. Research seems to be always finding more functions for this ‘miracle chemical’. These have been summarised by Dr. Ross Pelton in his book ‘Mind Foods and Smart Pills’: Vitamin C stimulates the immune system, enabling one to better resist diseases. Terminal cancer patients taking megadoses of vitamin C have been found to live longer. It promotes faster wound healing and reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood. It is a powerful detoxifier and protects against the destructive power of many pollutants. In addition, it protects the body against heart disease, reduces anxiety, and is a natural antihistamine. A severe deficiency causes scurvy, and eventually death. Increasing intake has been found to increase mental alertness and brain functioning in a variety of ways. Vitamin C is the main antioxidant that circulates in the blood. When available in sufficient quantity, blood carries it around the body, washing over the cells to create a bath of protection.

Whenever a free radical tums up, a molecule of vitamin C gives up one of its own electrons to render the free radical ineffective. According to Pelton, this process may take place somewhere between 100,000 and a million times a second, depending on the body's level of metabolism and the amount of vitamin C available. Unfortunately, with each radical decimated, a molecule of vitamin C is lost, so the body rapidly loses its supply of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a key player in keeping our neural system healthy. The body has a system that operates like a kind of a pump to concentrate vitamin C around our nerves and brain tissue. These tissues have more unsaturated fats than any other organs in the body, making them more vulnerable to attack by free radicals and oxidation. The vitamin C pump removes vitamin C from the blood as it circulates to increase the amount of vitamin C in the cerebrospinal fluid by a factor of ten. The pump then takes the concentrated vitamin C from the cerebrospinal fuid, and concentrates it tenfold again in the nerve cells around the brain and spinal cord. Thus our brain and spinal cord cells are protected against free radical damage by more than a hundred times as much vitamin C as our other body cells. For such an important chemical, it is extremely odd that we are dependent on vitamin C from outside sources. But how much of it does the body need? Research carried out by the Committee on Animal Nutrition demonstrated that monkeys needed around 55 mg. of vitamin C per kilogram of body weight. When this measure is extrapolated to humans, a 150-pound person would need a daily intake of 3,850 mg. Nutritional science recommends that a human needs 45 mg. each day. This is just enough to prevent scurvy but not enough to keep the body functioning at an optimal level. We would not, and indeed do not, obtain the sort of levels our bodies really need from a diet high in meat and low in vegetables/fruit, but we would from one high in fruit, shoots and leaves. Analysis of wild plant foods eaten by primates shows that many of these foods contain notable amounts of vitamin C. The young leaves and unripe fruit of one species of wild fig was found to contain some of the highest levels ever reported. Our closest living relatives, the great apes, eat a diet that contains between 2 and 6 grams of vitamin C every day. When our ancestors were living in the forest they would have consumed similar amounts.

I used to take a multivitamin, but not anymore. They're completely unnecessary if you have a healthy balanced diet, and can even be detrimental. It's far better to just eat right & get your vitamins/minerals from food.

Does anyone else ever get nauseous from vitamins?

Sometimes when I take my B complex I will throw it up.

I suspect it is due to alcohol damaging my bodies ability to properly absorb it. Feels like a waste though, B complexes are so expensive.

Anyone else take probiotics? I started them after a round of IV antibiotics for a stab wound. They seem to help keep my stomach issues at bay, especially if I eat processed foods.

I do agree with this, and studies support your claims. However I am not able to eat properly at the current time, and I think my body could use some help.

I actually just read that copper supplementation may cause copper to build up in the brain and cause Alzheimers. But the debate is whether copper, and aluminum building up in the brain causes alzheimers, or if it is a symptom.

So what do you guys take

I use Source Naturals Life Force without Iron tablets Its one of the best multivitamins in the world.  They recommend 2 tablets a day but the formula is so rich that I take just one, broken in half, one half with breakfast, the other with dinner. If you bargain shop online a jar of 180 tablets can be had for $30, so being on 1 a day only costs $5 a month, the BEST $5 you spend on nutrition that month.

To each half I add 1gr time released Vitamin C with bioflavonoids and a fish oil capsule containing 300mg mixed Omega-3's.

how often

Twice a day, every day, religiously.

why?

Improving the quality of my life by improving my organismic health and, if I were to die of old age, extending my life span by 1-2 years. Its really about being clearly healthier for the whole journey though.

As to those Life Force tabs, just look whats in them:

@wiccan

Good idea about breaking them up, I always just take it whole once a day for simplicity, but will try breaking them up. Probably better for absorption than just dumping a ton of vitamins into my system.

Do you have more information on this? I believe I may have liver damage, is the amount of iron in a multi enough to cause issues? Mine contain 4mg.

No. I used too but I quit when I learned that statistically, not only do multivits have a very tiny effect, it can be negative.
Really, you can't justify spending the money on them unless you're a starving African child who's malnutritioned. if, and only if you're suffering from malnutrition will they have a positive effect on a otherwise healthy individual.
It's not gonna make you "healthier than healthy" any more than vitamin water or whatnot.

Vitamin d3 (get the gummies)
they are delicious and very good for you, and you can safely take much more than the recommended dosage. I would sometimes eat a handful as a snack when i was living in a dorm
