Pasteurizing Coir. Yes or No?
    #18902940 - 09/28/13 01:57 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I heard that you SHOULD pasteurize poo, but you should NOT pasteurize coir.

Can somebody tell me from experience if this is true or not?

Just put a brick of coir in a bucket with 3 quarts verm and pout boiling water over it until it is nice and moist. then put the lid over the bucket and wait 30 minutes. Squeeze all the extra water out and spawn your grain. Simple as that

This is terrible advice. If you're going to follow the bucket tek then search for damion5050 bucket tek and follow it to the T. However I recommend proper pasteurization

How is it terrible advice?? It is the same damn tek as damion5050 hahaha. Except a little different ratio? What are you talking about noob, Ive done plenty of grows with this same tek.

Actually sorry the only thing I wouldn't follow to the T is the ratio in his tek. I would use 1 brick, 2 quarts verm and 5 quarts water. But anyway it's terrible advice because first of all  the OP is clearly inexperienced so he's a lot better off following a pre measured algorithm instead of adding too much water and then squeezing excess out. It's also bad because 30 minutes  in a closed bucket is not nearly enough time for boiling water to cool down enough for spawning. I need to just cough up the 10 bucks and change my username because I made it 3 years ago when I was actually a noob. I pull 4-7 oz off first flush with MS these days in a 66 qt mono

Well thanks for the sort of apology. Yeah great, I'm happy for you, but MS sucks, half the time the mushies have little potency. Anyway sorry OP, I would recommend 1 brick of coir, 3 quarts vermiculite, cup of gypsum(not needed but I like it) and around 5-6 quarts water. Put the brick and verm in a bucket and pour the boiling water over the sub. Put a lid on it and wait till it cools, you want your temp to be room temperature when you spawn. And make sure your sub doesnt drip water, it is always best to be on the dry side then wet. Easy to add water, impossible to take it out.

I think its terrible advice because you should ALWAYS properly pasteurize any and all substrate. Sure you may get away with a flush or two occasionally with the bucket tek, but proper pasteurization is easy and worth the peace of mind.

I never keep tubs past two flushes anyway so I suppose it is bad advice...

You must pasteurize manure.

"should not pasteurize coir" is absolutely incorrect. Pasteurization may not be necessary with coir, but to say "should not" is completely wrong. "Should not need to" is a matter of much debate.

If you have success with the bucket tek, then by all means use it. If you start running in to contam problems, then do proper pasteurization as a trouble shooting step.
