Strange bluing mushroom
    #18903492 - 09/28/13 04:51 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

My hunting companion found this yesterday, and I was stumped.  It has the bluing pattern or Conocybe cyanopus or Pluteus salicinus, but it is clearly something closer to an Inocybe.  My companion was a novice hunter, so I'm not sure whether to trust her on it being terrestrial.  Ideas?

Habitat:
Mt. Hood, OR; terrestrially (I think) in hemlock/alder forest.

Gills:
Tan, white on edges; serrated; sinuate.

Stem:
~1cm thick, ~12cm long; fibrillose, fibrils seeming to be dusted with brown spores; brown-tan at apex becoming blue at base.

Cap:
~5cm wide; brown-tan; with small recurved shags.

Spore print color:
Forthcoming.  judging from the apparent deposits on the stem, brown.

Bruising:
blue at base

Inocybe sp. You're in Oregon? Earlier this month OregonBlueShroom posted a bluing Inocybe. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18854000

Inocybe calamistrata is quite likely.

Nifty!  Their mushroom look like they are a different species in the I. calamistrata group than mine is.  As Alan described in that thread, they do have a slight fishy smell.  Time to break out the microscope to see if its spores are kidney-shaped…
