It it safe to cultivate mushrooms on rye containing ergot?

Hello Shroomery. I've been reading the forums for a while and I'm finally getting around to my first grow. I bought some rye at a market and I have found some ergot in it. The amount is very small, perhaps 0.1%. Is it safe to eat mushrooms grown on substrate that contains this stuff?
At first I thought it might have been a stray, black sunflower seed so I put it in my mouth and tried to split it open with my teeth... As soon as I realized it wasn't a misshapen sunflower seed I spat it all out and washed my mouth out several times. I'm sure I didn't swallow any of it, but I could use some reassurance that I'm not going to lose my limbs and die in agony just from having it in my mouth for 2 seconds...
Has anyone accidentally swallowed a single head of ergot and lived to tell the story? Or better yet, lived to post the story on an online forum using their own digits to type it up ?

Was it, by chance, bobs' red mill brand?
-------------------- Rocks speak to me, and tell me this: The Hell Creek formation is a gigantic slab of rocks that covers several western states. It contains an account of the dinosaurs' demise. In the late Cretaceous period, the first Cannabis species appear, and soon after, all the non-bird dinosaurs disappeared. Obviously, marihuana killed the dinosaurs. That giant meteor that smacked the yucatan peninsula right afterwards, coincidence.

It's a no-name brand from a local market (EU, not US).

You thought it was a seed, bit into it, and now you're an ergot expert?
You should return it and let the store know, perhaps.
Take a picture and show me. I've seen what you are thinking is ergot in rye before, and it is probably not ergot.

I'm not sure the amount of ergot in it is above the legal limit. Maybe I'm just worrying too much, but I've never handled any grains in my life, never made flour, etcQuote:

Obviously, stupidity.

I think you're worried about nothing
Can you share a pic of your grains? We could give you a more definitive opinion that way.

I've plucked all the big ones I could find from the grain and threw them into the trash. There are a few black seeds left, but they are the same size and shape as rye seeds, so they might just be black for other reasons. Tomorrow when I'll be simmering the seeds I'll take a pic of any more heads I find. But, for now, let's assume it was ergot. Is it safe to eat mushrooms grown on it?

I plant rye berries every year to feed the deer and wild birds, and lots of them grow ergot. It also works just fine for spawn, ergot and all. As long as you're not going to grow invitro and eat the whole thing including the grains, you're fine. RR

RR, is it common to see ergot in store-bought rye?
I have seen dark debris and dark stems but never something I would consider ergot

Yes. It's usually been broken up by the machinery but it's there. I usually sow a 50 lb bag of rye berries per acre from azure standard every fall, and the following year at least ten percent of them have ergot. RR

Thanks RR. So, we all eat tiny amounts of ergot alkaloids every time we eat bread? It's one of those things I wish I never found out, like what sausages are made of

I love chorizo though. I fry it up in the cast iron skillet, get rid of the grease and toss in some refried beans and put it under the broiler for a few minutes. . .put fried eggs on top and serve over a bed of tortilla chips with some cheese, sour cream, onion and tomato. . .
Now I'm hungry. RR

Oh, I love chorizo. No ingredient list will stop me from eating it
I'm glad I saw this as I was getting ready to head to the grocery store...I know what I'm making this afternoon. I've got two drawers full of fresh tomatoes from the garden to go with it.
