First jars! Is this the beginnings of myc?
    #18902337 - 09/28/13 11:06 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Nocced up 7 jars about 5 days ago. Noticed they are starting to grow something. Not sure if that's too fast for myc to start forming using MS syringe. Using brf/verm all according to pf tek. Used SAB and feel I was incredibly sterile in my procedure. Used two diffrrent syringes (4 F+ 3BM) both from a trusted vendor. This growth is present in all 7 jars just underneath the innoc holes. Hopefully this is myc starting and not a contam. Thermometer/ Hydrometer sitting next to them is reading 70-73°F 50-60% rH. The only variance in tek I did was use different jars (half pint jelly jars). Any old school pros wanna comment with some feedback? Would highly appreciate it.

I am definitely not an "old school pro"...but so far they are looking good IMO.  Looks like it could be a great start to some decent myc.  I used the same kind of jars in the beginning and they usually began showing signs about 7-10 days out..so yours is a little fast.  But, it could be you just got lucky with a great MS.  I would just say keep an eye on the color and make sure that pretty white stuff doesn't begin to turn green, blue, black...etc.  Good luck and enjoy!

Thank you for the input and advice. As you have experience with these kinds of jars, did you find it difficult to birth the cakes from these or no?

These jars are as easy to birth as the wide mouth half-pints. There is no lip at the top, so no issue there. Additionally, I have found that the mycelium pulls the cake together and my cakes have slid out without issue.

The only problems with these jars is the additional time to fully colonize the bottom. For some reason, I believe it is CO2 build up, the bottom of the cake is slower to colonize than the shorter wide mouth half-pints. The bottom of the tall half pint jars must have poorer GE compared to the wide jars.

The only difficult part is drilling all those holes in your SGFC once you birth those and need one that is.

Slow and steady :awesomenod:

RR has a great video for SGFC, it's in my signature if you just look around the site for the specific video related to BRF cakes, you'll be in good hands

Good luck mate :mushroom2:
