Help ID?
    #18902538 - 09/28/13 11:58 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I was walking home earlier today and met a friend in a field, he was picking some shrooms and we don't know exactly what they are... So we're trying to get some help, and we were wondering if you could possibly help us identify them...

Thank you for your help.

Nothing edible there if that's what you were thinking.

What makes you guys think these are Mycena SP (jw, pretty new to this)?

Also, looking on google, I haven't been able to find the information I need... Do Mycena SP grow in open meadows/fields/cow pastures, on the ground? Because, that's where he found these (I should have put that in the OP)

The general appearance. It's something you learn/just know the more you study mushrooms

Well, looked around some more, and it seems like they could grow where he found them (rainy cow pasture).... Still not 100% on the species, and trying to get some more input...

Thank you all for the help so far.

They do grow in grass yes. Although more often on wood. I've personally found them growing in grass in the same habitat as P. semilanceata and at this time of year they seem to be fairly common in that habitat as people looking for semilanceata often find them. No idea about species though. Mycena are hard to ID to species.

They are facts gained from personal experience or learning from here or elsewhere on the internet. You don't have to listen to me though. I have not taken any formal studies on the subject. What i have learned the most from is a combination of going out and looking for things, and reading this forum with the addition of sites like wikipedia, http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/, http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/index.php and www.mushroomexpert.com as references. And I'm still very much a beginner.

So, looking around for awhile, it looks to me like they are mycena sp... I haven't been able to find much information on the edibility of them though...

So, are they edible, or hallucinogenic?

Your mushrooms are 100% not psychoactive.
Most likely mildly toxic, containing muscarine.

Mycena grow everywhere.  Perhaps, the most widely distributed genus.

Googled "mycena edibility"

First on the list.

"Some species are edible, while others contain toxins, but the edibility of most is not known, as they are too small to be useful in cooking."
