under the sink
    #1890249 - 09/07/03 04:12 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

hello there my friend wants to start growing his mushrooms under his sink (his bags are almost 100% colonized), in this enclosed space with like a small door u can open and stuff (he's trying to mimic a terrarium setup inside this enclosed space sorta thing under his sink)... basically he was thinking if he could just throw some sort of humidifier in there to keep the humidity high adn the air running... its also not very airtight in there or anything, he was wondering if thats gonna allow the humidity to stay at a high enough level. He is also unsure whether he should open the lil door a few times a day to vent or would the fact its not a properly sealed environment (it's just like this space under a sink with wooden walls and shit, kinda like a closet) allow for the necessary air exchange(aided by the humidifier in there)? Or would he still need to open the door to vent? he was thinking of throwin some christmas lights in there to give the mushrooms the light htey need also... another problem he thinks could arise is contamination, cuz he's been pissin in that sink every for the last couple of years... would spraying lysol into the air in there take care of that? just wondering if that whole setup sounds like it would work, thanks

It might work, bu you could work on the following issues:

1. Air exchange won't be sufficient as it is. You'll have to fan a couple of days.
2. How do you ensure the right temperature for fruiting?
3. Due to the high humidity, woodwork will start to rot within a couple of weeks. You'll have to cover the wooden walls with plastic or so.
4. How will you keep contaminants out? IME, the closet under a sink is usually not the cleanest place in the house.

how about using a hydrogen peroxide mix or using some sort of disinfectant in the humidifier water mix to keep the contaminants out? temperature is not too much of a concern, hes expecting them to fruit at room temperature

Dude, underneath a sink is possibly one of the most contam ridden parts of a house. If you do plan on actually trying this, I suggest sealing the entire cabinet off with heavy plastic from the inside or find a better place to grow. This is like saying, "I want to grow behind my toilet," or "Can I keep my terrarium in the back of my shower?"
