Day 15:
Skyscraper Death Ray:
I realized that I had not had any recent history facts these first two weeks, so I decided that it would be a good idea to start out week three with something more recent. Rafael Viñoly was commissioned to design the Vdara Hotel and hotsprings in Las Vegas. Everything was looking promising during its 2009 grand opening.

It was not until later on that it would become apparent that due to the concave nature of the building the the suns reflection off the windows would create a "death ray" effect. This "death ray" changes positions all throughout the day as the sun makes its way across the sky. This effect is still taking place to this day.

But get this, that Rafael Viñoly guy they commissioned to be the architect of the hotel, he was asked to make a city skyscraper in London recently. Now, lets just take a look at this new building of Rafeals for a minute.

I'm guessing it's pretty obvious what I'm about to say, the dumbass designed a building with the same damn problem in it. This time before it was even finished being built, the "death ray" effect had already melted a Jaguar parked near by.

Lets hope the guy was insured for sky scraper death beams.

I just find it funny as 140 degrees - which is naturally found all over is considered a 'death ray'
and in my example - what does that make the pavement? A stove top of eternal incineration?

Day 16:
The Maginot Line:
After the horrors of the first World War, France wanted to make sure that they could never allow themselves to be invaded by the Germans once again. Their solution was to erect a 150 mile wall-fortress they dubbed the Maginot Line after their Defense Minister, Andre Maginot. This behemoth of a wall consisted of well over 500 buildings, some of which were even six stories underground. They build a large fortress every 9 miles, with smaller outposts in between, all of which were connected by a network of underground tunnels, as well as an underground train. The French didn't fuck around, every thing necessary to sustain the French soldiers was built underground- hospitals, supply warehouses, living quarters, recreational areas, motherfuckers ever built in air conditioned galleries.

But guess what? In May 1940, the German army invaded France despite their elaborate fortifications. The wall only extended north to the Ardennes Forest, a very hilly area thick with trees the French believed would provide natural protection. When the word came that the Germans were on the move, everyone believed they would march through the flatlands of Belgium so the strongest troops were moved to defend there. But the Germans did what the French believed to be impossible, they punch through the hole in the Ardenne outflanking the line and meeting weak inexperienced French who were easily overwhelmed. By the time the French had surrounded to the Germans on June 22, 1940, the Maginto Line had remained 100% interacted.

Day 17:
Franklins Rod:
In 1752, Ben Franklin proved that by attaching a metal pole to a building, you could safely redirect lighting into the ground rendering it harmless and thereby protect the building. When Franklin announced this, as strange as it may sound, many many church leaders were completely outraged. For centuries christians have believed lightning was directed by God as a punishment for sins. The christians found this tool of Franklins offensive because it was thwarting Gods wrath in their eyes.
So when lightning rods were quickly put to use by most institutions throughout the colonies and Europe, the church was slow to adopt this new technology. Rather then erecting the rods, priests continued the age old tradition of consecrating the bells. When there was a thunderstorm, the metal bells were rung as a special prayer was recited to ward off the storm. As you might expect churches were common targets for lightning, they were always the tallest building, and they had large metal bells at the top of them.
During the 30 years the church rejected Franklins rod, 400 churches had been struck and 120 bell ringers killed. The most compelling reason for the church to adopt the lightning rods came when lightning struck the church at Saint Nazaire in Brescia, Italy. Just like most churches at the time, the underground vault was used to store gun powder, and at the time of the storm more then 200,000 pounds out powder was being stored. When lightning struck, the church exploded, obliterating 1/6 of the city and killing 3000 people. After this the church continued their old rituals of protective prayers, but most also added on lightning rods.
