I'm not familiar with Mint, but I assume there's a step involved in the install process where you choose how the hard drive will be partitioned. At this point, you opt for a side-by-side install or (lacking that) go for manual partitioning and install Linux on the free part of your hard drive. Then further on in the installation (or after the Mint install has succeeded) you can configure GRUB to offer the option to boot the OS of your choice.

I assume you do have sufficient free, non-partitioned space on your hard drive. If you don't, you'll have to work on that first.

It's based of ubuntu so I'm pretty sure that's precisely how it works.

So you'd have to shrink the /sda2 partition to make space for Linux. Note that shrinking NTFS partitions comes with the risk of data loss, so make sure you have a backup. Also keep in mind that shrinking a partition this size may take many, many hours (during which the computer cannot be used), especially if it contains a substantial amount of data and/or has been used a lot.

Press the Prt-Scr key on your keyboard and choose where you want to save the file.

have done it myriads of times with disk utility, will most likely take less than a minute.....

Only if there are no used data blocks in the area you're trying to shrink...otherwise they're going to be relocated and the file table rewritten (which is basically a defrag operation).

i really like mint, but i have too much shit i would have to back up and i just dont have the resources to do so right now.

i think mint would be the shit once i got rid of windows completely, but until then... windows 7 will be the way to go.

Do you have an external hdd?  You can back up much easier on a live disc when you don't have to worry about windoze explorer.  You can use gparted to resize the partitions fairly easily, it has its own live disc even.  Also, if you resize your ntfs partition there is a chance the doze boot-loader will break.  Its not too hard to fix with the doze disc if you still have it.

i have dvds, but it will take a handful of them just to back it up so if i can get a HDD, then all is good.

im already disliking windows after fucking around on mint. windows seems... sloppy.

How many gbs do you have to back up?  DVDs only have 4.7 gb space, a 1 tb external hdd is relatively cheap these days.  Though what is that internal drive you posted pictures of?  How big is it?  Maybe you can back up onto that or maybe even install Mint onto it?

yea, i failed to read that closely, too early in the morning I guess.

I would just try to use that as either a data partition or just plug it in and install mint to it (probably the easier route).

I'm thinking the 200 GB drive is probably smaller/slower than whatever is in the computer now, so it's probably better to use the bigger drive for the OS and the 200 gig as storage/backup.
