(No LE, not the rock group.)

Just came back from the community pool and was accompanied by a very friendly stray cat. The poor critter had a neck half the normal size, one ear bent over and matted/clumped fur crawling with fleas. I gave it a little bit of love and he purred up a storm as he rubbed my leg, but it was almost painful for me to touch it. He was obviously sick, neglected and half starved. My empathy meter was pegged, but as I cannot have a cat where I live nor I am certain I would want to take in an animal with a plethora of problems. From just a brief contact, I felt I should do something; yet I know to feed him would keep him coming back and hanging around.

*sigh*

No real point to this story, just sharing a minor emotional moment and a bit of internal conflict.

if it were a homeless human bum purring and rubbing against your leg, i doubt you would have felt the same.

I was sitting on the grass in a park one night when a tiny puppy limped it's way towards me.  Cute little thing -- I gave him a bit of food I had on me and a scratch behind the ears.  When I got up to leave, of course he followed me as fast as his gimpy little legs could manage.

I'm accustomed to leaving human beggars in the dust, but damn that one was difficult.

The standard between human and animal beggars is different imo.

Human beggars have choices other than begging.
A stray (in my imagination) is scavenging for food most of the day.
