The 20th century saw death and carnage that the Romans wouldn't have even been able to imagine.
if you're talking purely through technological advancement sure, bombs and airstrikes are more destructive, but thousands upon thousands of men charging battle lines and hacking people to death is definitely more BRUTAL. Then throw in the lack of modern medicine and the often bloody pagan religions of the time and you have a far more brutal setting than almost anywhere in the modern world.
for instance, in the battle of Tuetoburg Forest, over 20,000 Romans were slaughtered and left to rot, all in a single battle.
War was entirely more brutal back then.

It is barbaric. But morally I see no wrong in it as long as everyone is doing so with their own free will and know the consequences of failure.

Tell that to the flaming half dead bodies that drowned themselves en masse in a river in Hiroshima. Or the lines upon lines of blind leading the blind of men with their faces burnt off in World War One. Or the tens of thousands of bodies hacked with machetes in Rwanda. Or the millions upon millions that died in death camps and gulags in eastern Europe and Asia. Or the people put in car trunks and left trying to escape the forces of Idi Amin. Iran Iraq war. Vietnam. Pol Pot. Unit 731. Motherfucking Hitler. The 20th Century was easily the heavy weight champion of the history of brutality.

as long as all members involved did so by choice
if I was on death row or something and had the option to take part I would
actually I take that back, I would love to see real weapon combat among skilled combatants I don't want to see people getting killed but to see combat as it was would be interesting
I agree with you
But I'd rather see samurai' come back instead of gladiators

I'm talking about guys with medieval weaponry entering a booby-trapped arena and fighting with a very real chance of dismemberment and/or death.
Would you pay to see it?
Nope, but i'm sure a lot of other people would. People today are so desensitized to violence and gore. I'm sure it would be popular, especially in the United States. But no, i'd never pay to see it, or even see it for free.

atomic bombs aren't exactly an everyday occurrence, and almost every war you mentioned the casualties would pale in comparison to the losses regularly sustained back then in warfare.
the Holocaust is so obvious it didn't even need to be stated, you think there weren't slave camps EVERYWHERE in the Roman Republic/Empire? Think again man.
Everything you said while certainly brutal, still doesn't compare to back then in my opinion.

I doubt that it exceeded the extermination of American Indians.
They committed a genocide that spanned three continents.

I'd most likely support it under the right circumstances...
Make it so that anyone can volunteer, anyone who volunteers make absolute BANK if they survive a season which would consist of several bouts against different range of enemies and under different circumstances and terrain to make it mpre exciting and challenging. But have a mandatory training period of 5+ years in a variety of weapons and fighting techniques. Basically turn them into ultimate bad asses. Give them some rules and shit and make an actual sport out of it and that'd be bad ass. Also, you guys seem to think that a gladiator match would be like football or baseball where there is forty games a day. A gladiator sport would be more like 3 matches a year or something. Make the season two years long and then give any who win enough cash to live WELL for life and also to anyone who suffered crippling wounds and managed to survive even of they didn't finish the entire season. Sorta reminds me of the hunger games...
Except not just anyone can join, you have to go through a camp and only a certain number of the top bad asses make it into the league. And a season only starts when there are a certain number of gladiators, like 30. Also don't fight them against each other all the time, every bout or season. Completely change the game every time and make it interesting.
Might be AWESOME. Might be sickening...
I don't know. I'm 50/50 on this.
