these pearl reference series drums are some series fucking drums. It's going to take months of piece-wise buying to finish this kit.

I'm going to add a couple of Tom's to this kit, then a floor tom, and a crash and ride cymbal. I'm only buying the best stuff so it is taking a while. And let me tell you these reference drums sound fucking gorgeous but goddamn they are expensive.

Do you know the pearl reference series? they go from composite birch maple shells in the small toms to mahagony/maple shells in the big toms and bass drum. the snare is 20 ply birch maple. And they weigh a ton. all super heavy stainless hardware, etc.

this kick has a really nice sharp attack, like a modern kick, but with the warmth of old vintage drums. Kind of reminds me of the old ludwigs with maple/mahogany, without as much interior 'reverb' Much tigher.
I got sold on these using the sset on addictive drums, a reference set and playing my roland v-pads with them, fuck they sound good just aas virtual drums. I heard the snare is like the fucking shit but goddam a new one costs $900 bucks.
Here is my other snare, Ian Paice steel 14x6.5.

Incidentally, some of the pros who play reference kits are Dennis Chambers and Omar Hakim....

Great choice with the hi-hat stand, I'm using the same currently and have no faults with it. I prefer, and currently use, all birch shells with a 20x22 7-ply kick using an Evans EMAD2 clear head. DW9000 pedals on the kick as well. Good setup, man.

Im not sure what im going to use as heads. I just put a remo renaissance emperor coated on the 3x13 piccolo and it sounds fucking great. (clear ambassador on the other side. I've hear the coated emperors are really good for large toms/snares, and coated ambassadors for small toms. But i think its a matter of ear.

I'd fucking die for that kit that has 3 floor toms and about 6 small toms, but goddamn, that would be like 8 grand.

I don't have much of a tom-boner, personally. I have two floor and two rack and seldom find myself desiring more. I only ended up spending around $2300 on shells. Cymbals are where all of my money went, man.
I've got a 20" K Custom crash ride, an 18" Sabian AAX stage crash, 16" A Custom fast crash, 14" Paiste Signature fast crash, a 15" Sabian AAX china, 10" Paiste Signature splash, 7.5" Paiste 2002 cup chime, 13" Sabian AA hats and a 21" Zildjian sweet ride. That's just what's currently in rotation for me, too.
I've always been a fan of a "less-is-more" approach to building my kits since I really started to develop as a drummer.

i was just getting ready to pm you about cymbals. Im getting the 15 zildjian new beat hh just because of how smooth and mellow it sounds, but i really like Paiste Crashes and Rides because ive always been a big fan of Ian Paice.

I've got a bit of a hard-on for fast crashes in particular, and I'll swear by Paiste's signature fast crash as one of the best. But goddamn, the A Custom is one gorgeous fast crash as well.
As for hats, I like a bright, ping-y closed and a long wash for the open tone, so I went for the AA hats. I'm going to be grabbing some AAX Fusion hi-hats soon, since they're far brighter. I've had these hats for a minute, too, so I'm ready for a lil' switch-up.
It's nice to have a drum-nut around here, too.

I like toms because i like the clackety-clack sound of a drummer going around the toms in a big concert. But im thinking, i am more into jazz, etc, so i am thinking of smaller toms an 8 10 12 and 14 hanging and a 16 floor. I like a lot of cymbals too, i really like paiste signature cymbals but fuck they are expensive.

Yeah, I've got a 10x6.5 and 12x7 rack and a 14x12 plus a 16x14 floor. Sometimes I don't even bring out the 16", but I tend to stray on the side of very utilitarian kit construction. I wouldn't mind playing around with a massive rack of toms sometime, but it's just not practical for my everyday applications.
