Ahhhh man, Dennis is the man, as is Cobham, Williams, Jones, Thompson, Collins, Laang, Carey, Alexander, Chamberlain, Colauita...but ok, now we're in instrumental fetishist territory...Peart, Portnoy, Bonham, Buddy, but at a certain point its like funk all dat. Just groove that shit and don't sit there like you've got it figured out, don't sit there and play a 'rock' groove longer than you have to.

Too dated? Watchu mean man? No that's Holdsworth on guitar. Do you have that album? I swear it sounds as fresh today as the falling rain, get it in a 16bit wav at least.
I dig DC but he's just so damn clinical, though that's not to say he doesn't groove like none other and get out there. I like his playing on the Industrial Zen album with Mclaughlin. Check out what he doesn't play on Wayne's Way, so tasty. (Sorry, couldn't find it on youtube)
You know who else played the shit out of some tunes with McLaughlin but gets little credit was Narada Michael Walden on Visions of the Inner Mounting Flame (and Apocalypse). He channels Cobham and I dare say out-funky's him.
Here's some 90's power goodness:

I have just about every album you can think of by Mclaughlin....Some of his newer stuff is jut absolutely incredible. But, 'Inner Worlds' one of his rare and old Mahavishnu albums probably is my favorite. Whenever I do mescaline, I HAVE to listen to this song from that album....
I don't know who was playing drums, but fuck, he is incredible, maybe it is Cobham.

Nah man, that's Michael Walden! Like I said, he channels Cobham well but he has a special kind of crispness, lightness, playfulness in his style. I didn't mention Inner Worlds along with the other two Narada Maha records because I sorta forgot about it because that album underwhelmed me when I was hard into my fusion phase but I know it's one of those records that I'll come back to, thanks for reminding me about it. Walden's friggin awesome but he's spent most of his career producing Soul R&B divas, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, lol...
Here's a track(two actually, the main one dedicated to McLaughlin) from Walden's first 'solo' album, released the same year as Inner Worlds, 1976, golden year for music:

That looks nice man. I bet it sounds pristine. How do you have it set up to record?
If I had the space and money for it I would definitely get a nice set of drums for my musical endevors. Percussion is my weak spot when it comes to producing but I recently bought maschine mk II which is the most amazing digital drumming software I've used.
