Psylosymons super sick cyanopus sighting!

So this is my original spot from first 2010 observation. For those who missed it google Conocybe cyanopus and check the wiki pic.
I was just slaying Agaricus campestris and had a massive bag full of beauties. So i went to search this one area where there could possibly be libs and stuntzii . And Im walking around scanning broadly for big Agaricus when my eagle eyes spot a few small orange caps by my feet. I know for a fact there has historically been lots of C tenera here but I looked close and picked a nice blueing stipe!
Well I searched my suroundings and too my astonishment they were everywhere!! In patches, nice large solitary fatties, it was like semilanceata picking!!
Pholiotina/ Conocybe are having a banner season. I bet tons of you will find them this year.
But like I said there is a big Conocybe tenera presence ,a well as C apala. Can you tell whats what in these pics?
Well you all asked me to do it but it was night time and things were printing and drying. But here is some smithii vs cyanopus pics. cyanopus is the fresher ones .

Outside of habitat, have you noticed anything that can help differentiate these from your potential P. smithii macroscopically?

That is a very nice batch you got there!
Do you suppose this species is getting more common? Or is it perhaps just a general increase in awareness around it?

Size seems to be a big factor, compare the length and cap sizes of jousts cyanopus to the length and size of the smithii I have on MO. They look very similar but one is short and stocky and the other is tall and slender.

Thanks brother! I am Leary of crossing the border in my vehicle. There is roaches hidden everywhere and I doubt I'd ever find them all! But if you can meet me at the crossing and pick me up that's more up my alley.Quote:

To be perfectly honest Byrain I cannot tell. I have only observed the potential smithii once. I will go back soon . But PMOTW says besides habitat they are virtually identical. And smithii has longer spores.Quote:

Thanks AF! This is just a small bit of the massive amount. It's hard to see if they are getting more common or not. I know this season is especially good. I did walkaround this whole area with those original fruits 4 years ago . But who knows if it helped. I think I just know more now. Been going here for 20 years. I know when I took John Allen here in the 90's we didn't notice them.

I think stipe height is dependant on surrounding grass and how high it must read for light .

much larger, thicker and different striations typically is what i look for, as well as habitat.

Picture 1 tenera right cyanopus left. Picture 2 tenera left cyanopus right. Picture 3 apala Picture 4Is hard to tell from. I seeing at least one bluing base on one of the upturned ones, but I see some white caps that look like apalas

Hmm, I wonder if your collections could be the same species? PMoftW is not too in depth on them unfortunately and FAN6 doesn't include P. smithii unfortunately, only P. cyanopus and P. aeruginosa. I look forward to the microscopy.

Any examples? Looking at the scoped P. smithii observations on MO and at the pictures here I'm not seeing what you are.
Edit: Also those are probably not C. tenera, it would be very irresponsible to call them that without any microscopy.

Nice Symon!
I have a P. smithii I can send out to anyone who wants to compare Symons with it.

Could genetic testing determine if they are one in the same? Maybe the ones that grows in the grass are a lot taller then the ones that grow out in the open. It would be interesting to find out.

Ya I agree that book is full of errors. I see where your going though . They could very well be just one species, and we have a perfect chance to test this. But I remember captain saying my cyanopus mycelium was faster and more vigorous then wiscokids P smithii. Also cyanopus creates mini sclerotia in culture! Quote:

Yea, that would be helpful, also the spore size is different, that would be a good thing to check. I still want to know if there is an easier way to tell the two species apart? Also, I'm curious if studying numerous collections in depth could reveal even more species?

I would just call them Conocybe. There are a lot of Conocybe with roughly that appearance and getting them to even section is pretty futile without looking at the caulocystidia. Also, without checking the cheilocystidia there are a few Pholiotina species that look kind of like that. Even with microscopy, getting them to species can be very difficult And don't forget that few of these species have been studied in depth in North America, I don't think they have checked DNA yet for a lot of them in Europe even.
