Boletus
    #18899584 - 09/27/13 05:01 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Mixed conifer forest.  Growing from the ground.

Gills:
White pores.

Stem:
Thick.  Close to the diameter of the cap.

Cap:
Brown.

Spore print color:
Very important!

Bruising:
Bruised slightly at the perimeter of the cap and stem.  Very slight.  See pics.

Other information:
No off smell.  Smells like mushrooms.

One last pic.  This was the extent of the bruising.

Help me out with this one if you would guys.

Looks like Boletus edulis or something close. What part of the world was it found?

Seems likely. I'd try eating it.

Boletus edulis is what I was leaning towards but I haven't found them before.
Thanks for the input.

Another vote for edulis.  Get choppin'!

Well, I suppose you could try for a spore print just to cinch it.  Can't remember what color it should be for B. Edulis, but you have probably already researched that,

From what I understand the print should be olive-brown.  I should have one in an hour or so.  Hopefully anyways, they seem fairly young.  They might not be that willing to drop.

Hmm....  Mushroom expert says brownish to negative with KOH.
B. edulis

Here is the cap with 5% KOH.

It did brown a bit at the perimeter of the KOH but I think I would classify that as a negative.

Boletus edulis for sure. Usually doesn't bruise blue but is the only Boletus species I know of that has that shape and coloring and that can bruise only very slighty like that. Most of the bluing boletes seem to be very easy to bruise extensively. I didn"t know that KOH turned the cap orange but I guess that cinches it.
One of my favorites, yum!

Clearly. It might be too young to leave a print.

Now stop messing about with KOH and eat it already  Seriously, those are in prime condition and apparently maggot-free. That's almost too much to ask for.
