Sugar is 'addictive and the most dangerous drug of the times' * 2
    #18899205 - 09/27/13 03:27 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Soft drinks should carry tobacco-style warnings that sugar is highly addictive and dangerous, a senior Dutch health official has warned.

By Bruno Waterfield
11:13AM BST 17 Sep 2013

Paul van der Velpen, the head of Amsterdam's health service, the Dutch capital city where the sale of cannabis is legalised, wants to see sugar tightly regulated.

"Just like alcohol and tobacco, sugar is actually a drug. There is an important role for government. The use of sugar should be discouraged. And users should be made aware of the dangers," he wrote on an official public health website.

"This may seem exaggerated and far-fetched, but sugar is the most dangerous drug of the times and can still be easily acquired everywhere."

Mr Van der Velpen cites research claiming that sugar, unlike fat or other foods, interferes with the body's appetite creating an insatiable desire to carry on eating, an effect he accuses the food industry of using to increase consumption of their products.

"Sugar upsets that mechanism. Whoever uses sugar wants more and more, even when they are no longer hungry. Give someone eggs and he'll stop eating at any given time. Give him cookies and he eats on even though his stomach is painful," he argued.

"Sugar is actually a form of addiction. It's just as hard to get rid of the urge for sweet foods as of smoking. Thereby diets only work temporarily. Addiction therapy is better."

The senior health official wants to see sugar taxes and legal limits set on the amount that can be added to processed food.

He also wants cigarette-style warnings on sweets and soft drinks telling consumers that "sugar is addictive and bad for the health".

"Health insurers should have to finance addiction therapy for their obese clients. Schools would no longer be allowed to sell sweets and soft drinks. Producers of sports drinks that are bursting with sugar should be sued over misleading advertising and so on," he said.

The number of obese people in the Netherlands has doubled over the last two decades meaning that more than half of Dutch adults and one in seven children are overweight in a country famed for its deep fried croquettes.

Actually, he's got a point. Processed sugar in foods is at it's peak, and it's a huge contribute to the obesity epidemic. For example, suppose I maintain my weight @ 2000 calories/day. This is with a healthily low amount of sugar. Now, if I start eating 1000 calories a day from sugar, I'll be less full, and I'll crave more. I'll end up eating like 2500 calories a day, which equates to 1 pound gained per week if allowed to continue long term. It's pretty fucking hard to break the cycle actually, it's not like a normal drug addiction where you can FEEL it's there, it gives the illusion of being gone and then you realize it's back again. I would be in favor of warnings on sugary foods/beverages.

This is, in fact, quite true. Think about it.

Oh I agree with the facts but it still shouldn't mean we should have the government control it and control us when people should have their own control.

This article kinda sounds like crack... I wonder how this thread would sound when you replace suger for crack lol

Yeah just a simple "this product contains a fuckton of sugar so watch out when you drink three sodas" type label sounds cool to me. Personally I stopped drinking anything besides water and do evertyhing in my person to not eat unhealthy. Instances like my birthday, I will eat a slice of cake or two. Fuck alcohol though haha this sugar ban should make it more apparent than that transparent label they throw on the back of the bottle.

The appealing side to this is that it would put things into perspective for a lot of people, and make them realize how drugs are actually not that different from common everyday things, and how certain rhetoric can make just about anything sound like a drug or stigmatize it in the same way drugs are stigmatized.

Good point. And I honestly agree with how the article says that a form of addiction treatment could work better for losing (fat)weight rather than diets.  I'm not saying full on rehab here, but an approach that isn't some fad diet would be nice.

Also, I'd like to see some restrictions or at least warnings. on those fad diet programs, they've been proven to often do more harm than good to people.
I've known people who bought into them and spent a lot of money on it and never lost any weight. They're misleading.

You're absolutely right to be sticking to water, dude. I did it for a while and it helped me get to a healthy weight/build. I fell off the wagon but your post reminded me that I've got to try and get back on before I start gaining a lot of cumulative weight.

amaerica needs this legislation more than any county. just look around then look at any other country. we have an outrageous  epidemic here and it will contribute to population decrease as long as these obese mothers and fdather/chidren stop giving birth to obese children. it sounds harsh and Nazi like, but we need to look out for true human health.

Well, not more than ANY other country. Mexico is overtaking us in terms of obesity rates because historically they've never commonly had to worry about being fat. Once we brought McDonalds and Starbucks to them though they got fat too, and everywhere fast food reaches this'll happen, it won't only be America and Mexico, it'll spread farther down South America and Europe.

Now I don't think we need to "police" what people eat, but I do think that establishments like McDonalds should have big red signs that say "WARNING: POOR NUTRITION AHEAD". Why? Because it's true. I can eat 700 calories in pizza and be full, but 700 calories in McDonalds and I'll be craving another 200-300 or so before I'm satisfied.

Same with Papa Johns (probably dominos/pizzahut too). I mean, I once ate HALF a pizza hut pie and I got hungry less than an hour later. Seriously, 1200 calories and I'm hungry an hour later. With normal pizza from a traditional pizza place (you know, the kind that juggles their dough and uses actual cheese), I'll be satisfied with 600-800 calories. But the frozen ultra-proccessed shit? 800 and I'll feel like I haven't even eaten yet.

The FDA continually fucks the rights of people to know what is in their food. They didn't even want it to be legal for people to advertise what they DONT put in their product, that;s why all milk in the US that claims to be free of the growth hormone still says "no significant difference has been shown between milk from cows treated with rBST and milk from cows that have not" even though that is a complete lie.
I don't want govt in my life same as the next shroomerite, but the food industry is out of control with this shit and people literally (sadly) do NOT understand the literal shit they consume every day.
I tell people this shit about sugar all the time and they laugh at me.

food labels are a joke, they're completely misleading and hard to understand and also omit information and straight up lie, so labeling food with the truth doesn't seem like a bad idea to me at this point

Also, the thing about schools... it's truly a miscarriage of justice what is being done to children in schools. Unfortunately the unhealthy food problem in america has crossed from a personal choice to a public health crisis and so fuck pepsi's and mcdonalds' rights. imo their "food" should be banned in school (because it's bought with our money to feed our children who are required to be in school.) Be realistic here, it seriously doesn't even taste that good.

At my job we pump 1-4 ounces of high fructose corn syrup directly into our drinks and use powder that never goes bad because its sugar coated with trans fat, and they lie to the customers who think they are getting an all natural fruit smoothie with cane sugar. This is the norm, go work in the food industry for five minutes. fucking out of control.

Easily my my most addicting substance.

And kids get addicted early.  Checkstands at grocery stores are littered with candy bars and sweets at kid eye level.  Or the cereal ailse; all healthy(or so called healthy) cereals are on the top shelf and sugar laced ones at kid eye level.

This strategic placement in stores is well thought out:crazy:

well said.  I've been working in grocery/food industry my whole life and see this type a shit happening all over.
They know sugar is addicting and will keep people coming back for more...or, young kids will piss and moan due to not having their sugar fix, just like an addict.

Folks need to stop drinking insane amounts of soft drinks. I mean, a can of Coke ever once in a while is okay, but when you're guzzling down a 2 liter bottle of soda everyday, it's time to seriously reconsider.
