Old colonized grain jars..still good!
    #18899085 - 09/27/13 03:00 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Been a while since I've been around
Anyways, here's some PE jars from MS..thing is, I'm pretty sure they're about two months old. I've had some go this long before, and they turned out fine. Basically I've been pretty transient, and haven't taken the best care of these. Sort of forgot about them really. They're developing some spots, but I'm not really thinking its a contam. But only one way to find out...

The bottom one was shaken a few weeks ago, but initially they all had that really nice rhyzo growth. After that point they all got super fluffy and thick, and then started developing what I'm thinking are just some metabolites. Any thoughts on it?

Anyone believe these are not metabolites?

For two months?
i'd say they are just metabolites.
When you open the jars smell that shit and tell us what it smells like.

You're good dude.  I've used old jars like that many times as I travel a lot.  Just make sure to properly pasteurize your sub.

Sorry to bump an old post, but I've been reading some old threads and some people were stating that if these jars have a build up of metabolites, as they are a few months old, that it's in response to bacteria, so these jars would be no good?
Most recent photo gives me reason to believe they're right...

All of the discoloration had occurred in the past month. Sucks cause this was the only PE I had and wanted to G2G one of the jars......I might just crack one to see how it smells before I pastuerize some sub....thoughts? Any dealt with similar looking jars with good results?

Old jars will secrete metabolites naturally, as they metabolize the substrate they're eating.

The spots are invitro pins. Spawn it now.
