I don't even have bleach in my house. I really think it has no purpose anywhere in the cultivations of cubes. The PC is going to sterilize everything so any little grains that get left over are just food for the next batch. I make sure the threads and everything are gunk free so they don't grow contams under the ring while the jars colonizes but all I do is rinse the jars with water after I spawn and it's never ever going to cause a problem because they get sterilized at 15psi for 90m.

Do up 100 jars without washing them, then let them sit for a week. Watch what happens.

Don't be lazy, it won't pay off.

I leave them all the time... They're not that dirty only a few grains are left in the jars after dumping them and then the rinse takes care of those. I'm sure a little bit of mold grows on any little residue but really who cares it's not like a jar full of mold I'm sure half the things in my fridge look worse than any jar I have left. I even did this with PF jars which get a lot of mycelium stuck to the glass. All they need is a rinse after birthing. Let them dry out put the lid back on use on a different day sterilize and imagine that no problems.

I suppose this is what the end of the world looks like...

Considering the grains that go into the jars are dirtier than the jar itself after I dry them in a colander, that sits in a cabinet that has dust in the corners, I think things will be A-OK

It's not lazy. I do clean my jars.. I clean them with a pressure cooker because I can't do as good as the PC can, and why waste soap.

To each there own my friend, I like my shit clean and get super paranoid about germs when I have a bunch of dirty jars. I hate it, plus if it bothers you that much just go outside and use a hose, takes 30 seconds a jar. Put it on full blast and spray away!

How can you expect something that's not clean to be sterile?

By realizing that you're subjecting it to 250-degree steam for 90 minutes, and understanding that that will render the jar and its contents sterile.

Organic matter is food for any contaminants that land on it. Why wouldn't you wash that off?

Because you're filling the whole jar with food anyway! Are you suggesting you shouldn't put grains in the jars either?

I'm not saying you shouldn't wash your jars, but you guys aren't using good logic.

Wash your damn jars, you lazy hippy.

We all expect our grain in the jars to come out sterile do we not? Are you saying you rub dish soap all over it before hand? Do you pump in sterile air as well? I don't know how, but ime they always come out of the PC clean. To this point I've washed all of my jars but thinking about it it seems as pointful as washing a dish, sticking it on the shelf, and then when it's time to eat washing the dish again. I also have left my jars to sit for awhile and within a few days any loose grains are simply covered in mycilium anyway.

Washed, clean jars smell good and look good. Dirty jars don't.

Jars go in the dishwasher and come out nice and sparkly clean, no exceptions.  If I were forced to hand wash every jar after every use, I'd switch to bags.

Dirty jars smell like fresh mycilium . Does a fully colonized jar smell dirty? I'm not talking about contaminated jars, I always wash those, though I would be interested how they would work too honestly, it *is* all going into the PCer to be sterilized after all. Perhaps if you had a trich contamination for instance and then you left all the spores in the before PCing it the mycilium would be contaminant resistant against those since the dead byproducts of the burst spores would be present from the beginning.

They do smell like fresh mycelium when the mycelium is fresh. If you leave them in your closet for more than a couple of days, your mycelium is no more fresh, am I correct?

Besides I just a don't want a closet full of unwashed jars. That said, it's free country man :gethigh:

I can't rrecall if they smelled like fresh mycilium or not, though I know I've smelled them after sitting for awhile and I'm actually inclined to say that they did. This is after ~2 weeks or more I'd have to guess. Have you ever seen mycilium 'die' for that matter? It always seems to be overtaken by contaminants eventually or if it fully colonizes a substrate it just keeps eating it until.. well... it's gone. Afaik everyone has always either thrown their substrate away after it appears to not be producing anymore mushrooms or it gets overtaken by contaminants after awhile.

 Sorry but I have some issues with your logic. Fresh mycelium smell like fresh mycelium when it is fresh, i.e. when it's healthy and alive.

After two weeks in your closet the mycelium dries out and dies. At that point it doesn't smell like fresh mycelium, believe me  It doesn't stink either. But a perfectly clean jar is so much better smellwise
