Is TSA effective? (agar question)
    #18898134 - 09/27/13 10:52 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I was able to get ahold of a couple petri dishes filled with pre-sterilized tryptic soy agar. I know these are meant for bacteria, and that I would have to be extremely careful/clean when working with them. But can they be used to isolate genetically favorable mycelium? I tried searching, and most of the posts were severely outdated or unclear, so I was hoping an experienced, agar-savvy member could help me. Thanks all.

According to wikipedia,
"One liter of the agar contains:
15 g Tryptone
5 g Soytone - enzymatic digest of soybean meal
5 g Sodium Chloride
15 g Agar"

Bacteria will grow on any agar media, you need to use good sterile technique when working with your cultures. If bacteria gets in there, it doesn't matter if it is TSA or MEA, it will still contam your dish.

Soytone I assume is soy peptone. Something I am always running out of

I'd pour a few dishes and give it a shot if you don't mind possible failure

Let us know how it works!
