Habitat: next to a creek around poplars, pines about 50 feet away.
Cap: mature specimen 4-8 inches across, slippery when wet.
spore print: printing in progress
no bruising was evident
Location: interior BC, Canada

I don't see the concentric rings on the base so my guess would be its not a.muscaria... but I would still wait for a t.I.

I don't think it looks like A. muscaria, either. Here's this:

http://www.shroomery.org/10224/Hunting-Fly-Agarics-in-North-America

:badshroom:

Spore print is probably white.

Was there a volva at one point?

I don't see a lot of colorful Amanita sp. out here.  But it seems like all the yellow A. muscaria varieties and look-alikes are east of you. I'll mail you some of my A. daucipes for some fun colored Amanita sp., but promise not to scarf 'em. :mushroom2:

They're there. Look harder. It is Amanita amerimuscaria or Amanita muscaria var. guessowii.

Ok. If it grows from decaying hemlock and does not readily stain blue,,,, what is it?

In regards to your question Boletellus ananas is my fisrt guess. becasus i don't think it readly stains blue. The other thought was boletellus chrysenteroides which I have found quit often on very rotted hemlock logs and stumps but it blues relativly quickly.
and in regards to the Amanita in question I can see eccentric ring and what looks like  the remnants of an anulus. so Ill have to go with A. Muscaria for sure.

Dude, you are right!

There could be different difficulties.

Such as, Knowing the genus to start with would be lvl 1.
Knowing only the spore color could be lvl 2
knowing only the habitat could be lvl 3, or really annoying seeing a million people guessing and getting it wrong. heh.

Maybe I should just stick to "Dude, you are right!" dude.

Coooool. Never heard of B. ananas! If I came across it I would
say it was a white Strobilomyces heh. Really cool fungus. I was referring to B. mirabilis.
Been kind of obsessed with it lately after I found it.

To identify the bolete, I'm gonna need to know where you found it (region), a close up of the stem (shape and texture), what color the pores themselves bruise (might take up to about 10 minutes), if they change color upon cutting. A close up of the pores is helpful to get an idea of their size, and a spore print is VERY helpful if you can squeeze one out (boletes are a bitch to print IME). I always find mycorrhizal boletes, sounds like you might have found a saprobic one.

Here's a good quick and dirty on bolete edibility:

Although it does grow from wood it is indeed a mycorrhizal species often
with hemlock. I wish it were a sabrobe. Id grow it!

It's probably a faded Amanita muscaria subsp. flavivolvata.
