does anyone here play dungeons and dragons?
    #18896260 - 09/26/13 09:57 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I used to play the pen and paper DnD roleplaying game when I was a kid, I was always the dungeon master, we had a blast.

I realize now how amazingly good that was for our brains, for the powers or visualization, creativity, imagination, an all those awesome thinking skills.

As much as I love video games playing an imagination based RPG is so great for the brain, instead of letting a computer program do the work you exercise the computer in your head, and learn to sort of telepathically mind-meld with a group of players and practice skills like improv, creative visualization, spontaneous cooperative play, etc.

So now that I am an adult I have decided to get back into it. My best friend and my wife want to play a campaign with me, and I will be the DM. I am pretty excited about it, it will be fun to smoke a joint, drink a few beers or glasses of wine, and create an interactive fantasy world in our imaginations.

I also plan to use the campaign as a basis for a fantasy novel that I will write as we go along, serving as a record of the adventure as well as a book I can write as we go.

Anyways its a dream come true for me to have my hot wife play dungeons and dragons with me. And its fun how enthusiastic my wife and best friend are about it.

Anyways, its a big challenge. I need to refamilarize myself with the rules and design a campaign and get back in the groove of things.

i downloaded all the fourth edition rule books etc and am just starting the process of planning it out.

So does anyone else hear play? It would be helpful to talk with someone who is actively playing the game to help me remember how to do it and just chat about it.

Maybe no one else does but hey thought I would ask.

By the way, anyone "here", not "hear".

Lol I got it right in the thread title at least

and yeah i am preparing for the Fukushima apocalypse, best believe that. But I also have time for DnD.

Thats the fucking awesome thing about finally being finished school. After like 20 years of academics I no longer have to do research, write essays, give presentations etc. All that stuff I never had time for before I finally can do.

I started playing chess with my wife, doing yoga every day, meditating every day, reading for leisure, vegetable gardening, made a website, started recording podcasts, opening a business, writing books, etc etc. Its fucking awesome.

Next on the agenda is a six month backpacking tour of like six countries in south america including columbia, peru, ecuador etc.

Life is good once you finally graduate!

Yeah after giving up DnD to play MMORPGs, single player games like Skyrim, etc I have come full circle and realized that pen and paper DnD is the best fantasy RPG experience you can have. Its so deep, so challenging, so stimulating, so creative, so inventive, imaginitive, unique, special.

Dont get me wrong I love video games but creating an interactive shared fantasy imagination improv experience with friends is something no video game can ever touch, the brain in your head is still more powerful than any computer and what you can do with it is unlimited. Its like an interactive fantasy novel that writes itself as you go, and no one , not even the DM, knows what is going to happen next.

I imagine it will take some time to get back into the swing of things but when I remember how good we were at it as little kids I can only imagine our new adult campaigns will be amazing.

I am going to really work to make it a deep, memorable, poetic fantasy experience.
