First Monotub Appears to be Stalling, Help Appreciated
    #18890436 - 09/25/13 05:39 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I've never done a monotub before. I used to do pf tek cakes and fruit them in a shotgun with mixed results (I think air currents in the room were probably the issue). I also experimented with rye and wbs (some innoc sessions led to completely contaminated jars) but never tried spawning out of fear of contams. I recently built a flow hood and now the only contams I've seen were from a spore print that couldn't possibly have been 100% clean in the first place. So I decided to spawn to bulk basically following franks sterilization tek but didn;t realize that pet stores sell 2 coconut by-products compressed into little bricks and packaged with a picture of a lizard on them so I accidentally bought compressed coconut husk instead of coco coir. Getting the moisture content right was hard as it didn't absorb water too well so it's possibly a bit wet but colonization started fairly rapidly. This was taken 3 days after spawning.

These were taken 10 days after spawning. Usually the last days of colonization are the fastest not the slowest. Is it done colonizing? Or did I fuck up?

A lot of times with coir it doesn't completely turn white like pf tek jars. Usually when I do it, the grains themselves look really white when they recover from spawning and the coir itself just gets a light looking white mycelium over it but you can still make out the color of the coir pretty well. Especially on the sides and bottom it usually just looks like coir mixed with white dots everywhere

I did photograph the top but the plastics a different texture and they didn't turn out too well.

Only going to bump this once. I bought 3 bricks of eco earth for $10 so I will not be using this husk stuff again but I think if noone else has any input I'm just going to introduce it to fruiting conditions and toss it after first flush or at first sign of mold. It's not looking any more colonized as the days go by.

You judge by the top, not the sides. Crack the lid and get us a pic. It won't hurt anything.

Looks like it's ready for fruiting though. Make sure to mist, as the coconut husk doesn't hold a lot of water.

I figured cracking the lid would lower CO2 levels and thus provide a pinning trigger (FAE).

This is how mine's looking. I'll crack the lid and take a pic now. I was going to sterilize my polyfill tonight anyways.

It won't lower CO2 enough to matter unless you sit there with it open for a couple minutes. You can safely crack it long enough to get a quick pic.

I'd give that another day or 2 to see if it fills in. If it does, let it finish. If not, go ahead and introduce FAE.

Alright. I feel not much has been happening the past few days but a couple more won't hurt. Going to pasteurize some coir in the meantime to do another tub. I paid $10 for that coco husk brick at petssmart and just got 3 of coco coir for $10 at a reptile specialty shop. So nice.

I don't see anything wrong with that tub  A coir sub doesn't need to be as white and uniform as a a manure based substrate. You can fruit it now or wait a couple more days, like said above. No biggie.

I introduced it to fruiting conditions, stuffing with polyfill following franks tek and I see no condensation on the walls (there was none during colonizng either, just on the top). Does that mean there's too much FAE or too little since it wasn't foggy during colonization when it had no FAE? There's a computer fan that's not blowing directly on it.

try stuffing the polyfill tighter on the bottom and see it that helps

:whathesaid:  There should have been condensation throughout colonization, the substrate is generating heat.

If there is no condensation, pack the holes tighter.

There should be a slight ring of dryness around each hole and thats it, the rest of the tub should be covered in droplets.

Well there were no holes during colonization (taped I mean) so I don't see how I can get condensation by stuffing the polyfil if there was none with the holes taped. I think possibly this coco husk isn't the best for moisture content. I'm going to buy a spray bottle and mist today and see if it helps. I stuffed one of the top holes (one closest to fan) a bit tighter last night but nothing changed. Bottom holes are pretty damn tight as per Franks tek.

Well I think my imperfect lid is too imperfect. Hence the lack of condensation during colonization. I put some things on top of it to weigh it down and now the tub is remaining foggy after misting. But now it won't be getting light from above either...

Looks like I've got a lot of potential aborts. One of the FAE holes (closest to the fan) has evaporation lines by it. The other doesn't.

The FAE hole furthest from the fan:

Closest to fan:

evaporation lines?

one of the substrate level holes:

There's quite a lot of side pinning. I didn't think I'd keep this after the first flush so I didn't use a liner. Do you guys think my humidity is too low? Or my FAE is not enough?

Based on those last pix I think your filter material is too tight (hope its polyfil?) And , I would have had a few more filter covered holes as well.

The goal with your holes in any kinda fc is to allow rH to build up, and still allow some fresh air exchange.
