i have nothing going on and could use something to keep my mind busy so i figure i might as well install linux mint.
whats the best way for me to go about this? ive never actually loaded a new OS over an old one. ive loaded a fresh win 7 on a few dif machines, but there wasnt any files that needed to be saved and or transferred.

test it with a liveCD first. that's what you call a linux that is bootable from CD. find it on the internet, gonna be easy. i bet mint has a liveCD too.
i doubt you'd wanna use linux over windows, so dont bother overwriting your old windows. use a fresh HDD or empty partition to test the waters with linux.

most programs were written for windows. especially if you play games every now and then, linux is not really a choice. depends on what you do with your pc... i guess some casual users would be ok with linux.
also, linux isnt easy to handle. it's doable if you google for solutions though.

I've changed for linux in 1998, then finally in 2002, never looked back
don't have any microsoft/proprietary product on any of my pcs
there are good games for linux too, quake i.e. they run faster than on windows, and starcraft/starcraft2 works on linux too perfectly
I'd recommend Ubuntu linux or Debian, depending if you want to invest little or more time on it(do it right, then debian)
ubuntu works right out the box, anybody can use that firefox, openoffice by default, youtube works with flash etc. everything works, it finds your drivers too automatically
installs your printer, wifi for you etc. easily
install linux for your freedom, say no to windows for your freedom

depends on where you wanna install linux and what your current setup looks like. wanna overwrite your old windows? if windows is on it's own partition without important data, you can just overwrite it.
i guess you could also create a new partition on your HDD. i have never really looked into that. dunno if it's a good idea, but i think it's possible. you could install linux on that partition and wouldnt have to backup any data.
easiest and cleanest way would be to get a 2nd HDD. they're cheap.

use unetbootin to create a bootable flash card.
Its better and you dont have to waste a CD for it.
i too deleted windows, and i dont regret it.
But well yeah, im not really a gamer so...

a 2nd hd would be like $20 on ebay, for 80-100GB
plenty of space for linux+games+music+movies etc.
then you can install linux with its native filesystem and still have your windows on the other disk if you regret
without dual booting
I would just remove windows personally and install ubuntu and backup what you might have, onto an external hd/usb drive
you can always install windows if you regret... but most people dont regret ubuntu

beat me to it, i love unetbootin. it will even convert an iso if the distro you want to use isn't on the list. mint is however on the list and it will even download it for you.

ill look into that today. thanks.
last night i realized theres a few games coming out that would be a great addition to my pc.
grand theft auto 5 being one.
i am a little disappointed cause i really enjoyed the smoothness of linux and i was hoping to completely leave windows in the dirt.

If you can bother with the setup
You could use wine to play your windows games, i dont know if GTA 5 will be supported. It think that its about time that the developper open their market to the open source OS'se.
Its a shame that Microsoft has still the market cornered when it come to games...

there is always the dual boot option. you can either put 2 hdd's with their own os or partition one hdd to hold both.

If you have an extra machine lying around without much power, you can install something lightweight on it (lubuntu, bodhi, eos, etc) and just use it to learn linux. That's what I did with bodhi, and I learned a whole lot.
I agree with mio. Swap out your HD. If you don't have an extra, they're cheap, but tbh you can probably find someone with an old unused one you can snag for free. Then your windows is exactly how you left it, and you can try out linux on your same machine with no risk. Mint is a good idea to start with.

I gotta go with lateshaggy, with a live disk of Gparted or Clonezilla He can re-size partitions and keep his Windoze it would be good for him to learn how partitions work how to set up swap space and even set up a storage fat 32 partition that he can share between the 2 systems. A few other OSes He could try Vector which is Slackware Based or Zorin or even DL a few live distros To see what he likes. And using live you don't wipe out the Windoze boot loader and replace it with Lilo or grub till your sure. No offense but there are better places than The Shroomery to learn linux www.linuxquestions.org Op look around for linux forums most have beginners sections. At Linuxquestions you also can download almost every distro out there. If your feeling ballsy start with Slackware or Arch.
