i usually dont participate in finding solutions to ones problem on this forum since i belive i wouldnt do much diffrence without having an open conversation with a person. but since u are getting very shitty answers ill tell u my opinion. i read some books meant for therapists so i got the general idea about aproach to problems like this.

1. therapist is good thing, LOTS of people should talk to one, nothing to be ashamed of. IMO it isnt easy to find good one, i personally would look for someone with transactional analysis education.

2. the best answer you got yet was from mister #14. i find myself having impulses like the ones he decsribed too. i do sometimes look at my parents dog and i have thoughts of harming it but i would never do this. very common reaction to an impulse like that is fear. (i use word "impulse" and not urge, i think its more adequate as term and word "urge" has some mystical buff; "one has too control his urges or he is nothing but an animal" and stuff like this.) as i was saying, when you realize what an impulse you just had common reaction is some form of frustration, usually fear (u are emotional about your emotions). panicking after having impulse isnt good since you become even more stressed. more frustrating emotions at the same time can combine and than your mood can get very affected - vicious circle.

3. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT EVERY EMOTION IS RATIONAL. there is no irrational emotion/impulse . dont get me wrong, in you case u wanting to harm you cat is very bad and yet your thinking has its logic. everything does. if you figure out the logic why you wish to harm small animals, you can "eventually" stop haveing impulses like this. but before everything else, you really have to understand WHY this is happening. it could be because of bad experience in the past (like some people mentioned) but i wouldnt really count on it, this explanation is too stereotypical).

4. human mind is complex and it stores many information (just think about how many informations you are receiving at the moment, all your senses are giving information to your brain and most of them you will never be aware of). this is why terapist is good because there are many possible reasons for you impulses and the can be identified mostly through talking.

5. and yeah, google OCD. i belive people with ocd think like op or #14 (or me for that matter).  but ocd is phase where you have much less control over the impulses, so i wouldnt say we have ocd.

6. some people fear that they can loose control to their impulses. this is not true. but beliving in something like this makes it more possible to really lose control.

7. if you are interested in psychology, i recommend transactional analysis.

ah yes and one last thing, someone earlier i think metioned eating psychedelics could help you with your problem. i strongly disagree with this, it could actually make it worse. unless you know exactly what your doing.

and ye, no offense, but #12 is telling only bullshit. he doesnt really understand you to begin with. i wouldnt give much on what he says.

Hey guys. OP here.

So, I was alone with my friends small dog for the first time ever today. The one that really made me realize how much I wanted to hurt small animals sometimes.

I had all the time in the world alone with it too. But I didn't hurt it, I kinda wanted to, but then I picked it up, and felt no urge to.

So, I guess we'll see how this progresses now.

You feel angry.. and not just like laughing? Angryness I would see a therapist for.. if you feel like it is simply enjoyable that it gives you a rush, it is because you have vampireblood.

good question.

I think it is more of anger. I don't think I could laugh in the face of an animal i was hurting.

I dunno, its all so weird

Let me first say, I've never really acted on this urge.

It just kinda freaks me out when I see pictures of helpless kittens or dogs and all I want to do is pin them down and listen to them struggle.

I would never do it to my own pets, because I know them. But random helpless animals almost make me angry inside. I dunno what to do with these feelings, other than not share them with close friends of course :laugh2:

Are you saying that you like to feel angry? Seeing random animals in helpless state makes you angry, yet you desire to put random animals into a state of helplessness - so, logically, you desire to feel angry. Why is that?

I love animals and I've had that feeling before as well.  The only time that stands out in my mind was when I was a kid and I watched Bambi.  I liked Thumper, but there were certain shots/scenes of him where I had this intense urge to strangle the life out of him.  I was like 4 or 5 maybe?  I remember it disturbed me for a second then I just kept watching the movie.

It sounds like an instrusive thought, which is a symptom of OCD.  Nothing to worry about but if they bother you or you feel like acting on the urge then you should talk to a professional.
